I sent my D70 into Nikon services because the ccd was not fitted square.
I noticed this when I took some shots of my daughters post graduate work

to
reduce a A2 posters to A3 Or A4 I took them square on and through the

view
finder they where square when I loaded them into my computer they where
tiltin down to the right slightly. I took the camers back to Nikon on

the
18 /06/04 they told me it was ready to collect yesterday Thurday the

26th
July when I got there it wasnt ready. So had make another trip and

collected
it today. It still has a slight tilt. I phone to ask what they had done

and
I was told the ccd had been changed,

Snip Snip
To day I removed the lens and compared it to My film Nikon F50 and it

looks
as though its the mirror on the D70 that's tilted. As you know the D70 has
assentric adjustment allen key nuts one for Auto and one Manual focus
adjustments when the mirror is down the reflection of the pentaprism
groundglass screen on my camera is tilted comparing it to the F50. On the
f50 the adjustment allen nuts are in the left looking into the mirror
assembly where as the D70 are on the right. I'm surprised that the
technician did not pick this up. because on reflection (sorry) is more
likley to be the penatprism or the Mirror miss-alignment than the CCD.
So its going back asap. Hopefully it will not take two weeks this time.
Perhaps it was my suggesting that the CCD was tilted that threw the

technician.

try setting the autofocus system to closest subject for faster and more
reliable autofocus results.

Thanks All,
I'll check the camera out using a spirit level on the top of the tripod,

on
the bit that the camera is screwed onto, and check it out that way if

it's a
problem Nikon get the camera back.
Thanks for your feed back MikeS

Mine got confused at to what it was supposed to focus on. It'd get it
right about 20% of the time. OTOH I probably use manual at least 50%
of the time so I only lost 30%...if all that makes sense.

Actually my 24 to 120 lens quit focusing to infinity a couple weeks
back. So I sent that in. $240. Then about a week later the camera
got confused. So, it went in. If your time is typical I should have
it back in about another week...except for the holidays.

Didn't help, but I used the dynamic focus and avoid the closest focus
as it wasn't usually what I wanted.

Christopher.
I think you meant to post this advise elsewhere.
But as your here there a fundamental flaw in using closes subject and that
is it uses all the focusing points on the screen as well as the centre one.
I think you will find that, if you have time, try it as I did you will find
it is not practical to use because if say the left hand focus point sees
something it will focus on that and not the central subject. I suggest you
try it in the say taking a flower that is central in a bunch it will
certainly focus on the nearest but not the one you want to focus on.
If your experience is different to mine I would like to know how you
achieved it. Thanks in advance,
MikeS

mike, your understanding of the closest subject setting and experience with
it is right. my point is only that i find it much more predictable (as
opposed to letting the camera 'decide' which focus point it chooses to be
appropriate). predictable behavior means you can then anticipate when
manual focusing will be necessary, as in the field of flowers example,
rather than being surprised (or disappointed) when you review the image
later.

ps. don't know how this message became orphaned. sorry for the confusion.
