Nice portrait. he first seems a bit too contrasty.

We're in agreement on that to a point, but I think it might have been
enough to just bring the eye area up a bit in both photos. But I'm
once again looking on the wrong monitor for this sort of thing. All 3
of us might be seeing something different.

If you guys want to play here are the two RAF files:
https://db.tt/OZKjfFXT
https://db.tt/lUdPYX4E

Just curious - why are the file sizes about double what I'd expect for
that camera?

Why are you surprised? What sort of RAW file size did you expect for the X-E2?
Remember file size will vary according content.

All of my raw files with all of my cameras tend to be about the same
as the sensor size. I don't expect exact, but yours are double.

Different cameras, different camera CPUs, out of my Nikon D300S with a
12.3 MP sensor I got NEF files in the 19.5-20.5 MB range depending on
image content.

What camera are you using?

Pentax K3, 24 MP, files are about 24-30 MB.
Pentax K5, 16 MP, files are about 18-24 MB.
Canon 12 MP cameras, both are about 10-16 MB.

Anyway, looking at them in LR, I'm really impressed with the IQ at
1:1, and even at 2:1.

This is what I did - just used the adjustment brush to bring the
exposure up around the eye area about 1 stop. Kind of a silly
exercise...

These days I shoot RAW+JPEG and the SOOC Fuji X JPEGs are so impressive
they are usable without any Post processing. The RAF files don't need
too much either, but when they do there is quite a bit of leeway.

Since you were using LR you probably noticed that the Fuji X-lenses
have lens profiles applied in-camera.

Nice photos, nice detail. How close were you? And were those with the
Fuji?

Thanks.

I was about 6 feet away, and it was shot with the X-E2 + XF55-200mm.
Scrub Jays aren't too squirrelly around people.

The Florida Scrub Jay is a threatened species.

The Florida Scrub-Jay is actually listed as threatened, but Jays tend
to behave as if they don't have a care in the World.

Developers are
clearing out the areas that are the bird's natural habitat. There are
a few parks where there is scrub, and they are a favorite place for
photographers. It's bird that anyone can get close to.

The Florida Scrub Jay will even land on your finger for a selfie.

We have a reserve here, Elizabeth Morton, a National game reserve, and
IIRC the only one in the country that encourages visitors to feed the
birds. As a result, the birds have become so acclimated to people that
during the really cold weather some species, mainly the chickadees, will
literally eat out of your hand. But the woodpeckers, cardinals, jays and
turkeys will pose nicely, if you feed them.

The preserve has posted signs asking people to not feed the birds or any
other wildlife.

That change must have been made since last February.
