impossible, and is much better done with other tools.

GIMP is an image editor, not a paint program. It will
add text, but it doesn't draw lines or other shapes
well. It is an excellent image editor, though like any
good image editor it is complex and takes a lot of
experience to master.

Your second link is to the kind of work where GIMP is
appropriate, and on quick look it appears to be
relatively well enough done. I didn't download it for a
close examination but it didn't appear to have any
problems at all with contrast, brightness, etc. That is
where most beginners miss the mark.

images, though there are special times when it is
useful. Edit the image, and then if you wish, with one
given presentation form, put a border around it and put
a title, date, whatever in the border.

Agreed. I haven't had an opportunity to play with the latest version
as yet. It seems to have changed some things around, and, I was still
getting used to the 'old' interface. :-(

close examination but it didn't appear to have any
problems at all with contrast, brightness, etc. That is
where most beginners miss the mark.

I thank you greatly for your remarks, but, truth be told, I didn't
take any of the actual pictures shown in either of the links. I
isolated sections of images and placed them on the postcard in the
first one, and I added a small amount of text to the second one after
doing a little image editing, but, I didn't snap any of the actual
pictures used to create them.

Sorry to have accidently caught you up in what I was upto, I feel
like I might have trolled you by mistake, and, for that I apologize.
Both pics were intended for a specific poster who doesn't mind
stalking others (living or dead) but doesn't seem to appreciate a
small taste of his own medicine. OTH, I do find your commentary to be
useful for my own hobbyist level digital photo manipulation and will
refer to them when I'm working with my own stuff.

What significance is that? First you didn't mention it
at all, second there is nothing there that is specific
to layers other than it would be extremely hard to
accomplish that image without using layers. Layers is
just another tool.

But the point is still that GIMP is for editing each image!
It is not a page layout tool, it's not a typesetter... just
and image editor. If the images were properly edited by the
time you acquired them, then GIMP is not of much use!
