We have seen this coming. But it's sad to read about it anyway. At least,
they will continue to make some manual focus lenses as reported in one of
the two resources. Are they accurate?

Well, this is a bit like the demise of the LP. Just assume if you are in
the market for a film camera this may be the last one you buy, so make it a
good one.

Still using and FM and F3. These things just last for ever. Something, I
definitely cannot say of DSLRs. A DSLR is outdated the moment it shows up at
my doorstep.

Considering the fact how long LPs are lasting and how short-lived CDs are,
it was a loss to switch from LPs to CDs. There are still people treasuring
their turntables. I am sure I will be one of the few still treasuring my
film camera even when buying a pack of film for $$$$.

I think I'll be content with my FE. Made in the day
when men were men and sheep were nervous.

There's an 8008 in the kit, but I never developed
an affection for it.

Some of the sharpest images I've ever seen were
taken with Nikon AI and AIS lenses (and scanned
on Nikon scanners.)

My digicams are Canon.

Why does everybody say this? I still use my old Nikon F's, and I assume I
will be using my D70 for many years. Yeah, someday I may want a DSLR with
20 megapixels, but right now this camera is a long way from obsolete for me.

You've got that right. I went out and bought a kick ass turntable when they
came out with CD's. Again, this is my last turntable.

I am sure I will be one of the few still treasuring my
film camera even when buying a pack of film for $$$$.

What's the price of silver now?

The D70 will be obsolete in a few years if full frame sensors become
economical, and the "D700" can use the full coverage of your WA lenses.

Considering that one of the sources is a Nikon web site, you would
have to assume it's "accurate." What isn't clear is how long each
current film camera will be available in stores.

The manual focus lenses that they are continuing to manufacture appear
to be ones that don't have a direct AF counterpart, e.g. 35 mm f1.4.
The announcement didn't mention mirror lenses like the 500 mm f8.
That omission surprises me, unless they are in fact discontinuing that
lens, which would be sad. (disclaimer: I already own that lens.)

But, why is this overall announcement "sad." Many of the people in
this newsgroup are "digital bigots" and the marketplace overall seems
to be all digital, except for specialty stores Nikon is responding
to economic and marketplace reality, and for that they should be
applauded. It also appears that they can use their manufacturing
facilities more profitably for digital cameras, which suggests that
they are doing quite well with digital sales.

I use only film today, and will continue to shoot b&w (with home
processing, of course) even after I do go digital with a full-frame
Nikon DSLR. (separate flame/thread). To me, it was "sad" when Kodak
announced the discontinuance of all b&w papers, but again, not
surprising. How many people print on silver-based "photo paper" as
opposed to an inkjet printer.

Of course your film cameras have been "outdated" for several years. And of
course any digital camera you buy today will continue to work jes'fine for
years too.
It sure sounds like you have a bad case of sour grapes.
