Orthodox Jews Selling Consumer Electronics
I notice that a lot of Orthodox Jews are invovled as resellers of consumer electronics, particularly digital photography and video...I thought it was just B&H and J&R, but even doing an internet search you see that all these e-tailers are headquartered in Brooklyn...anyone know what's up with this? Is this like how Koreans are known for corner gorceries (like how Italians used to be), and Indo-Paks with the cabs and gas stations, etc.? I ask because every search engine I use seems to turn up some place that turns out to be a Brooklyn office (though some are in Jersey) closed on the Sabbath...I wonder if the NYT has done a story on this phenomenon yet...the really funny thing is how prices are so cheap, but then they get you on the "shipping and handling"..... |

1. How do you know the stores are run by "orthodox Jews"? Just because they
close on Saturdays? Around here, the Seventh Day Adventists close on Saturdays. 2. In Texas, most people call Sunday the "Sabbath." So, which days are the stores closed? 3. What difference does it make who owns the stores? 4. Why do you care? Or are you just trying to start something? Pat in TX |

Oh, BTW, just as an FYI to my fellow consumers out the you might want to make sure you're getting the "retail version" such what you find in a place like Best Buy or Circuit City...these "Jewish places" like to list an extremely cheap price, only to tell you later on that it's the "body only" (if you're getting, say, a camcorder) and not the "retail package" with photo-editing software, cables, and battery, which brings the price up considerably -- though, to be honest, still cheaper than so-called box store prices.... |

Some storefronts are in Manhattan (42nd St. Photo for instance), but warehouses are in Brooklyn. I'll guess this is because property (or rent) is cheaper. The retailers are probably in New York City because that's where many ships offload their cargo, including electronics. Some stores that sell electronics are located in Caliifornia (cargo ports again), or in the Midwest (central location, cheaper shipping to customers). I remember buying an astronomy accessory from J&R that was shipped from Brooklyn. Parcel post to Albuquerque took about 5 days. I know nothing about the ethnicity/religion of camera dealers in general, except that the clerks at Albuquerque camera stores are a mix of ethnicities. Probably a lot of Jewish store owners in NYC because there's a lot of Jewish people in NYC. -- Pat O'Connell [note munged EMail address] Take nothing but pictures, Leave nothing but footprints, Kill nothing but vandals... |

BTW, did this panorama of the Sandia Mountains a week ago or so: http://www.karlwinkler.com/Sandias_panorama.jpg I recently bought a D200, and this was shot with the kit lens (18-70) which I have since sold to get the 17-55. -Karl |

It's a conspiracy to take over the world. They started with Kosher food stores (notice how most of those are run by Jews), now it's cameras, soon it will be everything. Scares the life out of me.
