I think my D80 died. Need something new
My 13 year old Nikon D80 is not working properly. I get ERR on the LCD.
It looks like Nikon does not support repairing this model any longer. The shutter count is about 30,000. Assuming that I now need a new DSLR, I see there is a range of options. My D80 had a focusing mechanism in the camera body, and I have one portrait 50mm lens that requires this. Any recommendations? I saw a D750 and D3500. What can the 750 do that the 3500 cannot besides full frame sensor/ Thanks -- m-m www.mhmyers.com |

My D80 had a focusing mechanism in the camera body, and I have one portrait 50mm lens that requires this. do you mean the focus motor? Any recommendations? I saw a D750 and D3500. What can the 750 do that the 3500 cannot besides full frame sensor/ a lot. the 3* range is entry level and lacks a focus motor. if you want to continue with dx and require a focus motor, look at the 7* series. if you choose to switch to full frame, your dx lenses will need to be replaced and fx lenses will have a different equivalent, possibly also needing to be replaced. your 50mm 'portrait' lens becomes a normal lens and you'd need to find an 80mm lens for the same field of view as you had before. |

I personally buy used from a generation or two back. I had a D80, and still have a D90; a similar camera but a worthwhile upgrade. Very inexpensive on the used market, but also, alas, now unrepairable. The D7200/D7500 is a worthy successor. All the above have focus motors; the 7200 and later are new enough to work with the very latest lenses. |

My lenses a
70-300 4.5-5.6G AF-S 18-135 3.5-5.6G AF-S 50mm 1.4D AF Nikon Fieldscope adapter which will select shutter speed but requires manual focus I've been happy with these lenses, so I would like a camera that will accept these even if I have to manually focus the 50mm. But I like the new features such as video and WIFI capability so I don't have to always remove the camera card. thanks In article , Scott Schuckert wrote: In article , m-m wrote: My 13 year old Nikon D80 is not working properly. All the above have focus motors; the 7200 and later are new enough to work with the very latest lenses. The question I would ask myself is, "How much do I want to stick with Nikon?" I loved my D300S, but decided to make a radical change to a mirrorless system back in 2015. I settled on the Fujifilm X-series, and I was happy to have made that decision. Today I shoot a Fuji X-T3, and X-E3, along with the eight Fuji lenses I have accumulated in the ensuing 5 years. So you have been given an opportunity to consider alternatives to your 12-13 year old D80, and DSLR's. -- Regards, Savageduck |

What can the 750 do that the 3500 cannot besides full frame sensor/ Thanks Like Savageduck, I also abandoned Nikon and went mirrorless, but for me the reduced size and weight of MFT (micro-four-thirds) were very appealing, and I ended up with a Panasonic G7, with lenses covering 16 mm (zoom and fisheye) to 600 mm [all 35 mm equivalent focal lengths). Been delighted with that change. Today, though, 98% of my photos are taken with the Google Pixel 5 phone (the 3 and 4/4A have the same camera). Having the low-light capability, built-in panoramas and excellent image processing software built into the camera means that it suffices almost all the time, particularly as we are no longer allowed to travel! -- Cheers, David Web: http://www.satsignal.eu |

Then it's not a portrait. yes it is. |

I really don't like the way it handles. especially in the manual mode. I don't know if the D3500 has the internal focus motor. I doubt it. Personally I'd bite the bullet and get a higher end model like the D750. I have a lot of older Nikon glass. It is very impractical to use them on the D3400. I get by with the slow kit lens. 18mm - 50mm, 70mm - 300mm and 18mm - 135mm. I do miss being unable to use my Nikor 180mm f2.8 ED IF. I had a D90 that shutter jammed too. I liked it much better than the D3400 except for it's 24MP sensor. Still the D3500 + two kit lens price is a selling point |
