I guess there are going to be a whole bunch of criminal drone flyers in the US then. I really like my Mavic Air 2, and I had been seriously considering upgrading to the Mavic 2 Pro with the 1” sensor. So I might have to check on the Autel offerings, as The Evo II Pro with the 6K 1” sensor seems to be a reasonable alternative to the M2P. -- Regards, Savageduck |

IIRC, DJI was on the DoD banned list back in 2017. IIRC, the security concern was that they were "phoning home" detailed terrain mapping data - and supposedly at a level of detail that the drone itself doesn't even need in order to fly. The DOD wasn't worried about "detailed terrain mapping data" they were worried about operational data from (mainly) the GPS/GLONASS receivers. Such data could obviously compromise field operations. The US' topo data is openly available in high resolution already. Don't need no stinkin drones. There's at least a couple of shortcomings in that statement. The first is that such data doesn't include 'terrain' inside of buildings & structures. Or places where a government has required 'fuzzing'/etc. The second is that for centuries, cartography has included "traps" (fake data) in order to know when someone's illegally copying your copyrighted materially. As such, it makes sense to independently verify the data. -hh |

Many other GIS products are available. China (by contrast) puts heavy controls over all map data - and this includes a lot of restrictions on drone s/w used in China. -- "...there are many humorous things in this world; among them the white man's notion that he is less savage than the other savages." -Samuel Clemens |

From the article: "While this doesn’t immediately affect U.S. consumers from buying DJI products, companies added to this list have historically found it challenging to do business in the United States; Huawei is a prime example.” The blacklist means only that US companies cannot export anything to DJI, not the other way around. It still might affect their sales here, and cause other problems down the line, but right now, it might not mean much to US consumers. And to be honest, this is the only place I’ve read about this. It’s not making any news. |

The blacklisting probably amounts to nothing more than keeping this in the back of your mind when shopping for a drone. |
