Looking at the new Nikon 8400/8800 they support an additional JPEG

Extra, Fine, Normal, Basic
Does anyone know whats special about this?

If there is a sample original image somewhere it would be easy enough to
check.

Could it be, that they finally switched off the color subsampling?

Unlikely since Nikon use Bayer mask sensors so the hardware has already
subsampled the colour detail. And there would be no real point in
storing redundant interpolated chroma pixels inefficiently.

There was a marketing meeting at a really crappy bar near Nikon HQ.

It went something like this:

"Sales are slumping."
"Our technology isn't dazzling our customers anymore."
"Something must be done!"
"Should we invent new technology? Stake out a new trail?"
"No, that would be hard and expensive and vaguely competetive. Management
doesn't pay for creativity and insight - we've learned they much like
mediocrity and same-old-same-old."
"Why not just add a bogus JPEG compression option that _no one else has_?"
"Brilliant!"
"Spectacular!"
"Another bullet item in the documentation! Another graphic for the box! Our
stupid customers will be very impressed!"
"Get our tax-law department on the phone immediately! R&D has succeeded
beyond our wildest imaginations!"
