For what it's worth, changing dl=0 to dl=1 allows one
to download the ZIP directly. The page doesn't work
for me due to script.

I like the red. It brings out the pink in her skin. The
other image looks ominous to me. The faded colors are
grim. I imagine she's probably going hungry in a war
zone somewhere.
But it's not the colors that change it. It looks like you
also darkened it by adding contrast or sharpening. The
shadow from the hat and shadows around the mouth
and left eye are all noticeably darker. That doesn't happen
when I just desaturate. The contrast seems to be what's
causing the ominous quality. My version of desaturation
shows the same soft face with no change in the mood.
Yet you said you only desaturated.
