iPad: Apple could sell camel dung to their fans

The iPad isn't a laptop without a keyboard, it's essentially a large iTouch (with the option for 3G). It's likely to be very successful. Who would buy an eBook reader instead of an iPad? Battery life. While an iPad will let you read for up to 10 hours, a Kindle will let you read for up to two weeks. The iPad looks to me like a bad compromise - it takes the worst features of the iPod Touch and laptops and really doesn't add much. -- Ray Fischer |

I guess you are not familiar with Apple's "zoom" feature, available on Mac's, iPod Touch, the iPhone and now the iPad. All enabled with gestures on the touch screen or pad. -- Regards, Savageduck |

Who would buy an eBook reader instead of an iPad? Battery life. While an iPad will let you read for up to 10 hours, a Kindle will let you read for up to two weeks. Battery life is big. The iPad's 10 hours won't be enough for most trips, but the Kindle will be fine. Not having to worry about power on the road is big. And free, worldwide connectivity. No BS finding and paying for a service provider. Toss in lighter, thinner, higher resolution, better viewing in bright ambient light, and you've got, if not a winner, then at least a strong contender. And the Kindle will be US$100 cheaper in a couple of months. THANK YOU, APPLE! The iPad looks to me like a bad compromise - it takes the worst features of the iPod Touch and laptops and really doesn't add much. Still, the screen should be amazing for photos. The iPod's pretty cool for photos already. I was out to dinner with friends, and was able to show them my pbase images on their iPod. My question would be: which screen is more resistant to scratching and mechanical damage? Will iPad will talk to my home WiFi? My impression is that Kindle won't. I'll probably get neither, but merely a 12 or 13" notebook to read from the sofa. A notebook would also let me tame Win 7 at my leisure before switching over on my main work/photography computer. (I'm expecting to not like the Win 7 UI.) -- David J. Littleboy Tokyo, Japan |

My impression is that Kindle won't. it works with any wifi network. enter a password if needed. it will remember the ssid/password and auto-connect next time it sees the network. |

I've been making 2-week trips to the states 3 times a year, and the need to have bricks for everything is a pain. (Fortunately, I won't be doing that this year, though.) But any trip with two long flights and a couple of nights in-between is going to make 10 hours nowhere near adequate if you actually use the thing. -- David J. Littleboy Tokyo, Japan |
