I am old, have a lot of experience and I am getting one.

Battery life. While an iPad will let you read for up to 10 hours, a
Kindle will let you read for up to two weeks.

The iPad looks to me like a bad compromise - it takes the worst
features of the iPod Touch and laptops and really doesn't add much.

Yes, in addition to the box for $599, you'll have the pleasure of

try again, this time with real info.

the base model is $499 and if you're in starbucks, why not use their
wifi? the 3g is optional, and the monthly fee is either $15 or $30/mo,
depending on bandwidth. it's also pay as you go, no contract needed.
cancel at any time.

Old people....

You'll need to be young to read the New York Times in 2 point font on
that TINY screen.

I guess you are not familiar with Apple's "zoom" feature, available on
Mac's, iPod Touch, the iPhone and now the iPad. All enabled with
gestures on the touch screen or pad.

Battery life is big. The iPad's 10 hours won't be enough for most trips, but
the Kindle will be fine. Not having to worry about power on the road is big.

And free, worldwide connectivity. No BS finding and paying for a service
provider.

Toss in lighter, thinner, higher resolution, better viewing in bright
ambient light, and you've got, if not a winner, then at least a strong
contender.

And the Kindle will be US$100 cheaper in a couple of months. THANK YOU,
APPLE!

The iPad looks to me like a bad compromise - it takes the worst
features of the iPod Touch and laptops and really doesn't add much.

Still, the screen should be amazing for photos. The iPod's pretty cool for
photos already. I was out to dinner with friends, and was able to show them
my pbase images on their iPod.

My question would be: which screen is more resistant to scratching and
mechanical damage?

Will iPad will talk to my home WiFi? My impression is that Kindle won't.

I'll probably get neither, but merely a 12 or 13" notebook to read from the
sofa. A notebook would also let me tame Win 7 at my leisure before switching
over on my main work/photography computer. (I'm expecting to not like the
Win 7 UI.)

you are away from a plug that long?

it works with any wifi network. enter a password if needed. it will
remember the ssid/password and auto-connect next time it sees the
network.

Yes. I've been making 2-week trips to the states 3 times a year, and the
need to have bricks for everything is a pain. (Fortunately, I won't be doing
that this year, though.) But any trip with two long flights and a couple of
nights in-between is going to make 10 hours nowhere near adequate if you
actually use the thing.

And what are the odds that you would have been carrying something the
size of an iPad with you at the time?

that's not a typical usage pattern. no power ports on the planes?

for most people, if it lasts a day or two between charges, it's more
than adequate. they can plug it in at night, or even during the day at
work. no matter what the battery life is, there's always someone who
will want more.

don't forget, 10 hours is for web surfing on wifi. for listening to
music, it can run for 140 hours.
