Default FA: See those old cameras and portrait lenses in action!

This is an auction for a book called "Professional Portrait Lightings"
published in 1947. It contains about 250 good-size examples of B/W
portraits, each accompanied by text and lighting diagrams explaining
how the picture was made -- what camera, what film, what lights (no
strobes) and what lenses . . which brings us to the point:

We see these old portrait lenses all the time on eBay -- Wollensak
Veritos , Versars and Vitaxes; Voigtlander Heliars; Goerz Dagors,
Dogmars and Celors -- not to mention Cookes, Pinkham and Smiths, and a
half-dozen other brands and types.

But what ARE they, and why does such old glass get such good prices?
The answers, my friend are blowin' in the wind -- no, actually the
answers are in this old book.
