But my grandfather was on this ship when it hit a mine.

My grandfather's war. He was in the 55th artillery, but was later
selected to play trombone in Sousa's band.

Yup! It was my English grandfather's War. He was born in 1895, and
survived being one of the 1914 recruits into the fledgeling Royal
Flying Corps. He made it to 84.
My US grandfather somehow avoided service in WWI, but only made it to
68, finished off by pneumonia after he slipped on an icy sidewalk in
Utica, and broke a hip while on his way to the liquor store.

My paternal grandfather served as a junior infantry officer in the
trenches (WW I) and as a recalled officer in WW II (POW camp).

A great grandfather (mother's side) served in the trenches (WW I) and in
some administrative role back home in WW II.

My maternal grandfather was killed in a late night truck accident prior
to deployment (WW II) as a corporal. One side of the story is it was
his fault (driving too fast) the other side is they were over-working
everyone. It's been mentioned that speed governors had been removed.

A great uncle (son of the above GG - twin brother of my grandmother) was
a merchant mariner and after his first round trip was absolutely
convinced he would die in WW II from a U-boat torpedo. He survived
uncounted round trips from Halifax to the UK. And saw many warships and
merchies go down - in some cases with sailors he knew aboard.

I had an uncle who served in both WW1 and WW2 inspite of having been
severely gassed in WW1.
