Man acquitted for shooting down annoying drone. (Good)

wrote: From Dpreview (though they most-likely cribbed it from some other news source): A federal judge in Kentucky has dismissed a lawsuit against William Meredith, a self-proclaimed 'Drone Hunter,' who shot down a $1500 drone that was flying over his property. The pilot, David Boggs, sued Meredith last year claiming that his drone was flying in legal airspace as determined by the FAA and therefore was not trespassing. A 1946 Supreme Court decision asserted that a property owner's rights extend up to 83 feet in the air. US District Judge Thomas Russell ruled that federal court is not the proper venue for the lawsuit, noting that the FAA has not enforced any regulations regarding aerial trespassing, nor was the agency a party in the suit. Instead, the Judge said that the lawsuit should be litigated in Kentucky State Court under existing trespassing laws. Boggs' attorneys have not said whether he will appeal to a higher court – in this case, the 6th US Circuit. In the meantime, drone pilots should probably steer clear of Meredith's property. The litigation will get serious when somebody shoots down a drone like this one http://rmax.yamaha-motor.com.au/agricultural-use -- Regards, Eric Stevens |

Not surprising that RichA can't get his click-bait subject lines correct. The case was dismissed. Wrong venue. What has not happened is that the police did not level firearms discharge charges at the shooter. The police are just steering clear of it. While it is not proper to trespass or invade privacy, the remedy is to tell people to buzz off and/or call the police. Not dig out the shotgun and destroy people's property. For example, if someone parked on your lawn you would get into serious trouble for shooting at it with any weapon. Damage to private property is far out of proportion with the offense. Likewise shooting down someone's drone even if they are using it illegally. -- "If war is God's way of teaching Americans geography, then recession is His way of teaching everyone a little economics." ..Raj Patel, The Value of Nothing. |

Off the topic of shooting down drones, but on the topic of drones... There's a golf course near me that is no longer used as a golf course. The owner's closed it for lack of business. Some drone owners are using one of the holes as a drone game field. They set up arcs of cloth-wrapped wire of various heights and sizes and have timed races of how quickly a drone can be flown through all of the arcs. First Person View (FPV) drone racing is quite popular ... and mildly insane. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwL0t5kPf6E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icx4uEi-kPY -- "If war is God's way of teaching Americans geography, then recession is His way of teaching everyone a little economics." ..Raj Patel, The Value of Nothing. |
