CANON IXUS 500 (S500)
Hi there,
I'm looking for a compact camera and I am thinking of buying a Canon IXUS 500, is there a better deal or, instead, is a good one? Eventually, a Fuji F450 maybe is better but i do not know. Cheers. |

CANON IXUS 500 (S500)
I have the S410 (basically the same camera but 4 MP instead of 5). Very
happy with the results. Great carry-around camera. It will not replace a higher end camera as far as the controls (almost non-existent) available. Great little camera if all you want is a point and shoot that will fit into your pocket. "Nusat" wrote in message ... CANON IXUS 500 (S500)

I've got a IXUS 500 and it's a great 5MP camera. The only minor short coming is it doesn't have any scene modes. I have a S410, which is nearly identical to the S500 except for the sensor size (to the extent that Canon prints a single manual for both cameras). These camera have very limited control modes. As Mike points out, the S410/S500 lacks most of the "scene" modes of the larger Canon cameras, but since I never use them anyway I don't miss them. On the other hand, the camera also lacks the more extensive manual controls of most Canons: there is no M, Tv, or Av mode (full manual exposure, shutter priority, and aperture priority modes). The S410/S500 provides only a full-auto A mode (equivalent to Auto on other Canons) and a M mode which is also full-auto exposure but lets you set ISO, white balance, etc. (equivalent to P mode) on other Canons. There's also no manual focus. (There is a panorama assist mode, which is useful to lock exposure for a panorama series). So the camera is definitely more limited than its larger cousins, but when compared to other micro-sized cameras it does pretty well: It takes CF memory, which is cheaper than any other form and probably what you're using in your larger camera if you have one. It has 3 different light metering modes: evaluative, center-weighted, and spot. It has focus lock. It has custom white balance. It's really quite sophisticated for its size. And its image quality is among the best for its size. Part of this is likely due to using a larger sensor than many of the micro-sized cameras. Dave |

Cheers. I have an S500, which replaced an S400, and I think it is an amazing camera. On more than 95% of the pictures I have taken I couldn't have done better with a camera with full manual control of exposure and f/number, except possibly for some depth of field control if I had wanted to control that (I didn't). The images are very sharp and make excellent 11x14 enlargements. I bought this as the go-everywhere camera to compliment the DSLR I plan to get, but frankly so far there have been extremely few instances where I wished I had a DSLR. I keep dealing the purchase of a DSLR. The small size is also good for somewhat candid shots of friends and people, becuase they tend not to notice the camera or take it seriously. I have the underwater case and recently took over 200 pictures while snorkeling in Hawaii. It performed flawlessly, much better than the fish did; they just don't hold still. Cheers. In my enthusiasm, I failed to mention some drawbacks to the camera. The higher ISO settings are very noisy and for me worthless, but that hasn't been a problem so far in the shooting I have done. The movie mode isnice resolution, but (I think) only anout 10 fps, so it's sort of jerky. Its great virtue, small size, can also be a handicap. It has very low mass, so it's easy to shake during exposures. You just have to be more careful. A few more plusses. I find it focuses very well and takes a picture quickly in its speedy mode. It takes long exposures- up to 15 seconds- that are virtually noise free and quite amazing in what they will show with avilable light at night in a typical city situation. Joe |
