Default Ebay should be under investigation

I don't know anyone who has done any kind of
business (10 or more deals) who hasn't experienced
some form of fraud. I don't know anyone (at all)
who isn't aware of some form of fraud on Ebay.

But Ebay will NEVER release the figures showing the level
of fraud on their sales sight. It would KILL their stock price
once people were more aware.

Well, I've got over 400... haven't experienced *any* fraud
so far.

I don't know anyone (at all)
who isn't aware of some form of fraud on Ebay.

I've certainly *heard* about alleged incidents. Just like
I've heard about how some guy in Nigeria wants to send
me $50 million.

But Ebay will NEVER release the figures showing the level
of fraud on their sales sight. It would KILL their stock price
once people were more aware.

And my eBay stock has done pretty well, too.

So, what happened? Someone leave you bad feedback?

I've made many more than ten purchases and never had a problem. On two
occasions when I was dissatisfied the seller made an immediate refund upon
receiving the goods back.

I've also sold several items, dealt totally honestly, and received 100%
feedback.

However, I think that one of the reasons for my 'luck' (so far) is that I've
been buying camera equipment, mainly lenses. I think that I'm dealing with
people like myself - older, more responsible, and perhaps more affluent and
less likely to perpetrate a scam, people who were brought up at a time when
honesty was considered to be a virtue, and who had appropriate behaviour
whacked into them in school.

If I was delving into the murky 'young' world of mobile phones, or computer
games, etc, I daresay I would have been cheated by now.

Photo enthusiasts, it seems, are a fairly decent bunch, overall.

You don't often make sensible comments, Richard, but this time I think that
you're probably spot on.

Maybe you mix with the wrong people.

I don't know anyone (at all)
who isn't aware of some form of fraud on Ebay.

I don't know anyone who isn't aware that fraud can exist in
*any* business. So?

Wow, everybody but you must be really stupid for not
thinking that fraudsters try to exploit the internet.

Sorry, must dash. I need to reply to a couple of hundred
nice people who email me wanting to give me a lot of money
for doing nothing. Am I lucky or what?

I've only had one bad eBay experience. I bought something and the guy
never shipped it. Went through PayPal's resolution process and got my
money back.
Now, the guy claims he shipped it, but it still hasn't shown up here.
The seller is a dickwad.

Of course, real photographers are all very nice and honest people.

The problems are due to those few people who are not nice or honest. They
certainly do not intend to let you know in advance that they are not nice or
honest, and might even be able to impersonate a real photo enthusiast.

So it is a case of "Buyer Beware". It is not too difficult to ask a few
relevant questions of the seller, and you can then make a better judgement.
If in doubt - Don't deal.

Anyone who uses Western Union, or similar, to pay on Ebay really has no-one
to blame except themselves.

I doubt ebay has all the figures. I've had many good experiences, both
buying and selling, and only one problem. I will say that you do get the
runaround when there is a problem. First they send you to :PayPal, and by
the time I got back to eBay to resolve the problem the seller was gone --
kicked off eBay.

Now, in the seller's defense I did buy a used piece of computer equipment
that worked for 2 minutes with no warranty.

eBay will always be a gamble, but IMHO it's a gamble that's well in your
favor. If you do enough transactions you will be ahead, you just have to
decide how much you are willing to gamble. I don't think I'd buy a diamond
ring from and individual for $20,000 on eBay, but I'd probably take another
chance on a used hard drive for $30.

One friend was willing to take a huge gamble and bought a guitar for
$16,000. Turns out it's actually worth about $35,000, so you can do very
well if you are willing to gamble.

With photo equipment and cameras I've found missing cables and such, but
replacing the cable still made it a bargain. If you don't want to take any
risks walk into a store and pay retail for everything, or buy only from
reputable Internet merchants.

I've never dealt with ebay, but my kids have with no problem. As far as
'dickwad' is concerned, whatever you mean by that, we shipped a package to
my daughter insured. Never received and post office reimbursed. I've failed
to receive photos from 2 different on-line processors. In each case they
made good at no charge. So maybe the seller did ship.

I bought my Coolpix via eBay from a lady in Philadelphia (I'm in Australia).
It appeared to vanish into thin air (seller says she sent it air-mail parcel
rate) and everybody said 'serves you right for buying second-hand stuff on
eBay'. I started to query her on exactly where and when it was sent,
thinking I'd been scammed, then two months later after asking my local PO
once again to look for it, the package was found 'out the back' with a
Customs Duty Due notice on it. They hadn't sent me a notification form to
let me know to come and get it.

So your seller might not be a 'dickwad', it may just be typical Post Office
incompetence...

Paul
