Kodak M583 photo transfer issue/complaint
I bought a Kodak EasyShare M583 digital camera a few weeks ago and I have an
"issue/complaint" about the way in which the pictures and videos get transferred to my computer. When I connect the camera to my computer with the charger/adapter cord, the only option that I have is to install and run Kodak's EasyShare software. The software is only set up to automatically transfer pictures to my computer or to sites like Facebook, etc. The problem for me is that it is all automatic. It either automatically transfers all new pictures and videos to a pre-designated folder on my computer, or automatically shares them with a Facebook or other website. There is no way to just plug the camera in and directly view the photos and videos that are on the camera's MicroSD/SDHC card and manually select which ones to move to what folders on my computer, which ones to delete, etc. My previous Kodak camera (V1253) would allow me to do this, but the M583 will not. The only other choice that I have with the M583 is to take the MicroSD/SDHC chip out of the camera and plug it directly into my computer with a USB adapter. But, the MicroSD/SDHC is really small and difficult to get in and out of the camera, and I am also concerned that by constantly taking the chip in and out of the camera I will end up damaging it. There is one other option. That is to first use the camera itself to pre-select individual pictures and videos to be transferred either to the predetermined folder on my computer or to a site like Facebook. I don't want to have to do that on the camera itself. It is hard to do and it doesn't let me copy one group of pictures and videos to one folder and another group to another folder. I want to be able to just plug the camera into my computer using the cord they supply and then directly access the pictures and videos on the card and manually move, copy, or delete them. I have looked at the Kodak support site and it doesn't show any way for me to do what I want to do -- it's either use their automatic "EasyShare" software (which I think stinks), or take the chip out each time and plug the chip into my computer with an adapter. I have also done Google searches on this issue and I cannot find anything on it or any active forums where this could be addressed. Does anyone know of any way to be able to plug my Kodak M583 camera into my computer with the cord that comes with the camera and bypass using the automatic "EasyShare" software so I can manually move, copy, or delete pictures and videos that are on the camera? |

My previous Kodak V1253 camera did that (showed up as another "disk") and I was able to copy pictures and videos from that "disk" (the camera) to any folder or New Folder I created on my computer. This new M583 doesn't do that. |

My previous camera (Kodak V1253) used a regular size SD card and it was easy to remove and replace -- so plugging that into a card reader and the computer was no problem. But, the M583 uses a Micro SD, and getting that out of the camera is really difficult. I have even considered using tweezers to get it out it because doesn't pop up and it is very hard to grasp with one's fingers. Tweezers, of course, could cause big problems with the card. |

The problem I was having was when I connected the camera to my work computer that uses Windows XP Professional. This is not a knock at Ron, for whom I have only sympathy. It's no fun to buy an expensive product and then find out that it doesn't work the way you expected. But Ron's experience provides an object lesson for anyone contempleting the purchase of an unfamiliar camera: Read the user's manual BEFORE you buy the product. Many (most?) camera manufacturers will make it easy to find on their Web site. One who doesn't may be telling you something important about how happy you're likely to be with your purchase. Bob |
