Sony Alpha dust remove system is a joke

I like the fact that the IS is in the body, and not the lens, so I can use it with the lower cost Minolta lens like the 70-210 f4 "beercan" lens. Do you know if the IS feature is also a gimmick? Thanks! From most reports the dust shaker is effective, though not as effective as the Oly system. The Oly system is known to have cases of less than perfect performance as well. Note than in 2+ years I've had to clean the sensor on the 7D twice. And I change lenses regularly. YMMV. The in camera stabilizer of the 7D, 5D and A100 work quite well, if not as well as the in lens IS/VR of Canon and Nikon. It will get you about 2 stops of margin over non "anti-shake". OTOH, it works with almost all Maxxum A-mount lenses so unlike Canon/Nikon you don't have to buy expensive lenses all over again. (It does not work with the 1-3X macro). Should work with the 70-210 f/4 quite well. (A lens that I keep an eye out for at used equipment meets, passed it up a couple years ago... damnit). Here are some tests (with the Maxxum 7d) that I did at 100 and 200mm. http://www.aliasimages.com/KM7D_AS_Test.htm I did not buy the A100. There is a pro model coming out in early 2008. Judging by the generous sized prism box it will have a very crisp bright viewfinder (hopefully as good as the Maxxum 9) and potentially a larger sensor (1.3x or even FF). There is also a middle model coming out in late 2007. I hope that it is at least "Maxxum 7D" class, though with a higher density sensor. (All per your needs, of course). The A100 has one wheel used for Aperture or Speed which is fin in P, A and S exposure-control modes, but a PITA in M mode (where I spend most of my time). If you spend most of your time in A,S or P, then the one wheel is fine. I would like to thank everyone for all the excellent feedback! At this point, its looking like I'll get a Sony A100 dslr body. With the build in image stabilization and dust cleaning system, which may or may not work, it seems like a good deal at about $600 or so. Further, I found an excellent Minolta 70-210 f4 "beercan" lens and a 50mm/1.7 lens for $200. With an extra battery and a few 2g CF cards, I should be able to get everything I need for under $1k!!!! The Sony A100 has one major claim to fame and that is that its image is the least "molested" by over-aggressive moire filters and noise control of any of the 10 megapixel models out there. Because of this noise is higher (which, sadly may make Sony cave in to the hacks and implement stronger NR) but resolution is also the highest of the 10 meg cameras. |
