Default Highway 395 ideas?

Hi all,

I and a fellow LF friend are taking a 10 day photo trip up Highway 395 in
California in early November and are looking for ideas for shooting
locations along the way. We both live in southern California and have
shot along 395 before but would love to explore new territory. Both of
are experienced LF shooters and familiar with High Sierras' conditions.

We're planning on working the area near Lone Pine (Whitney, Alabama Hills,
etc) for 2-4 days and then heading up to Lee Vining (Mono Lake, Lundy
Canyon, Bodie, Bridgeport, etc) for 3-4 days, and then possibly spend 2-4
days going through Yosemite (east entry gate through Tioga Pass) on the
way home.

Any advice on interesting shooting spots along the way would be most
welcome.

Thanks kindly,
Mark Westling

Given your itinerary, pay close attention to the radio about possible
closure of Tioga Road. This is that time of the year again!

And a half hour or so at the Mountain Light Gallery is well worth the time.
While Galen Rowell worked with the 35mm, the gallery features different
photographers in a separate room - some of them use large format.

If the road to the Bristlepines is still open, consider taking in at least
Schulman grove. You won't regret visiting the Discovery Trail. The
visitors center will be closed, but the road should be open given no snow.

And I've always found the trip to Eureka Dunes to be worthwhile if you are
into sand dune imagery. Footprints left by others is not as much a problem
as it is at the dunes just east of Stovepipe Wells. But the best light is
early and late - and the closest motels are in Big Pine such that camping is
the way to go.

I'll also recommend Darwin Falls - a pretty 30 foot waterfall. Last visit
several years ago had the pool beneath the falls enlarged to the point that
it was difficult to get the entire falls in the image without wading.
Hopefully the pool has shrunken in the years since to allow easier imagery.
