Can anyone tell me where to go in the Chicago area or in northern
Indiana to see large format photography? Most of the large format
photography I have seen has consisted of illustrations from books, and
I would like some opportunities to see actual prints.

Charles and the Group,
Being located just outside (North of ) Louisville KY, I have the same
problem here. It is rather rare to see any LF work. I've seen one local LF
(very few images) and MF exhibit. Slim Pickings here!

I believe there is/was recently an exhibit in the Chicago Cultural Center. I
paid only scant attention, and don't know the dates or who and what.

There was an exhibit at the Chicago Cultural Center that was a group show of
several "big name" photographers interpreting the landscape. Saw it:
interesting but not awe inspiring...prints made mostly from medium format with
a couple of LF users among the lot.
Your best bets in Chicago are the Art Institute and the Museum of Contemporary
Photography at Columbia College. Both of them have websites, so you can check
up on them from time to time.
There have been (and might still be...I'm SO out of the loop) independent
galleries dedicated to photography around Chicago in the past...photo had its
day-in-the-sun as the hip art form back in the seventies and, since it was a
commecially viable proposition then, a couple of enterprising gallery owners
went photo. A couple of my friends who were fellow students back at Columbia
College actually got shows at one or another of these galleries...but that was
long ago.
You might also check out the famous Water Tower on Michigan Avenue. They have
hung a couple of really good photography shows inside the Tower...it makes a
good gallery and the effect of stepping from the noise of Michigan Avenue into
the quiet of the Water Tower interior is an interesting effect in itself.
I wonder about some of the other cities like Rockford and the like...perhaps
someone else can fill in the info.

The Museum of the Art Institute has a good selection of Stieglitz
"Equivalents" and they are usually displayed. A search of their
website revealed a photography exhibit that features some of his
O'Keeffe portraits as well as other work.

Truly...besides the work shown in the Photography Gallery (downstairs) they
often include some work in the Twentieth Century collection that's on the
second floor. Basically, the Art Institute tries to show those photos in the
context of the work that's contemporary to it...some Man Rays, the odd
Stieglitz or Weston.

There are usually a lot of LF images on the internet. There are also some
exhibits in Toronto this month.

Chicago is a really nice city.

Chicago has loads of architecture. Unfortunately, much of it is very
difficult to photograph because of problems finding a good point of
view, and of course it has already been photographed extensively by experts.

Come to one of the Midwest LF Asylum's frequent outings. Someone always brings
prints, especially if you make it known that you're interested in seeing them.
There is some extremely high quality work in the group. Go to
http://www.dunnamphoto.com/ and click on the Groups button.
