Gee, some of the comments on that site show just how totally insecure
people can get.
I reckon that the a900 with some of the CZ sony lenses will be a
terrific system, even if sneered at by PJ/sports pros. I hope Nikon
doesn't take too long before bringing in 24mp in a D700 type body.

While I have a lovely CZ 135 f/1.8 for the Sony, I also have other very
sharp Minolta lenses:

- 100 f/2.8 macro
- 20 f/2.8
- 80-200 f/2.8

-300 f/2.8 (the "worst of the best", if you will; Canon and Nikon are a
bit sharper)
-28-70 f/2.8 (Here again, Nikon and Canon are a little sharper ...)

- 50 f/1.7 (trite, I know ... but a very sharp lens used f/4 .. f/16 and
down)

I've been putting off buying the Minolta 85 f/1.4 for a long time; maybe
it's finally time... or get the CZ 85 f/1.4 ... and the 135 f/2.8[T4.5]
STF and ... too many fantastic choices...

But it seems that Sony only provides the 85/1.4 and 135/1.8 in a native
Alpha mount (although those are sweet lenses). I'd want the 18/3.5, (not yet
rereleased) 21/2.8, and 35/2.0, though. Will the a900 take Nikon, Pentax, or
M42 screw mount lenses with an adapter?

I hope Nikon doesn't take too long before bringing in 24mp in a D700 type

My bet is 18MP in a 5D class body and 24 MP in a D3 class body is all we'll
get, if that, until next year.

Hopefully David Kilpatrick will see this post (I'll BCC it to him)
David do you know about adapeters that fit other lenses to the A-mount?
(reply to rpd.slr-systems, if you please).

I'd guess that would be about right. Some Nikon D700 owners would truly
spew green bile if a 24mp version is released too soon. There's even
enough D300 owners spewing bile on DPReview forums about the D700, but
apparently not noticing that the D700 is twice the price. The 24mp
versions of the 12mp Fx models should be about the same price. If the 5d
replacement has approximately the 50d feature set and price similar to
the current 5d price, then it should be a pretty attractive proposition too.

Those phots are a bit old. It peeves me that Sony have removed the
built in flash... great for controlling wireless off camera flashes like
the 5600HS or simply to trip studio lights...

And ironically, Nikon added a built in flash to the D700 (!).

Ah well.

I'm not sneering, a small FF is inevitable. I've seen the body, it's
not much larger than the A700.

Size doesn't matter, how much will this camera cost? Sony said publically if
they don't garner a 15% market share, they'll withdraw from the dSLR market.
If this is priced like most of their re-badged Minolta glass or CZ lenses,
it'll be still born! They are calling it a pro camera, but they don't have a
significant share of the pro market.

The apparent target price may be around $3999 US, £2,300 UK, $2999
euros. It would be good for the UK to enjoy a £1999 price but that seems
unlikely.

As for pros and share of the market, you can say exactly the same of any
entrant. That was the position Canon was in around 1974 - there were as
many pros using Pentax, Minolta, Leica, Topcon (a very popular pro
choice in the late 1960s due to US forces equipment) and far more using
Nikon. The FTb was an amateur camera and earlier pro attempts like the
RM2000 and Pellix had broken new ground, but never really competed with
the Nikomat, Nikkormat and Nikon F. Even the Nikkorex managed to sell to
pros at a time when the idea of a built-in 43-86mm zoom was appealing.

I get people sending me 'thanks for all the fish' letters every week -
members of the Minolta Club for two decades, changing to Nikon or Canon.
The main reason given is mistrust of Sony, one today as an example:

“However I have become disillusioned with the deminse of such a great
innovator and supporter of photography as Minolta, to be taken over by a
big, soulless corporation like Sony. I no longer have confidence in the
integrity of the brand."

But for every one of these, there are two new members who have bought
Sony and never owned Minolta. It's these photographers that Sony must
rely on for future market share, and they include future professionals
as well as future enthusiasts.

The Alpha 900 is perfectly designed for my own type of pro photography
which does not involve sports, news, action, birds, flight, motors,
bikes, long-range snooping, or low light.

David
