Default Photoshop elements

I have a photoshop elements questioin. I am trying to add fill light to a
poriton of a photograph. I select the area to lighten and a sqare appears in
the photo.

You need to feather the edges of your selection a great deal so that when
you adjust it blends in and not sticks out. Look for the feather option on
the selection menu.
