Sony's A850 down to $2100 Can. in Toronto (Oh Nikon....)
The same sensor in three different cameras at three different price points.
The electronics and embedded software attached to the sensor in Nikon's uber camera are apparently (based on reviews) superior to what Sony has done with their own sensor module. Is that worth the jaw dropping price premium? Even the entry level dSLRs provide technical quality that outstrips the needs and abilities of most amateur and professional photographers so if you think you are a better painter because your brush costs more . . . . --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: --- |

Is that worth the jaw dropping price premium? The sensor in the Sony A850 and A900 is a Sony design, manufactured by Sony. The sensor in Nikon's D3X is Nikon's own design. It is manufactured for Nikon under contract by Sony but it is NOT the same sensor as Sony's own. There is a very significant performance difference between the two sensors, especially at high ISOs, and that difference is almost entirely down to the sensor itself, not the embedded software. Absolutely, no question the Nikon produces better images, IMO, at all ISOs. But, the Sony is 4x cheaper and does offer a reasonably close image to the Nikon plus it shares a few other attributes, namely a weather proof body, though not with the Nikon build quality. The point is that for the money, it is a bargain and Nikon should be able to produce something at 2x the price that would be as good or better but still reasonable. |
