Default Pentax K10D

I'm thinking about making the leep into DSLR. I was looking at the Pentax
K10D since it looks to be a good mid-range camera, but has some options to
grow in to and learn more from. Does anybody here own this body?
Opinions? Which lens do you find most useful if you do?

Thanks in advance.

dont go Pentax.

Worst jpg of all DSLR, useless shake reduction and too hard to find lenses.

And all the new lenses are made in Vietnam and have serious QC.

Pentax are dead.

Go with Canon or Nikon.

Shut up.

There's nothing wrong with Pentax. I own the *ist D and the K10D. Both are
fine cameras. The K10D's shake reduction is as advertised, and at a fraction
of the cost of Canon's overpriced system. Plus, you get weather sealing. For
under $900. You're not stuck with looking for Pentax lenses. Sigma and
Tamron make Pentax mounts, and B&H always has the lenses in stock.

I have the Samsung GX10, which is essentially just a rebadged K10D.
Fantastic camera and very happy with it.
You'll probably get a few comments saying it takes bad JPGs etc, but it's
not too bad. Besides, most people will recommend not to use JPG for serious
work anyway. I normally use it with +1 saturation, +1 sharpness, -1
contrast, and it gives JPG results that I'm happy with. For anything serious
though I shoot RAW+JPG.
Things I particularly love about it:
*Being able to shoot in program mode but with the ability to change the
Aperture and Shutter, while maintaining exposure, simply by turning the
dials under my finger/thumb.
*Sv mode - I can quickly change ISO to keep the shutter speed within an
acceptable range.
*Green Button in M mode - one press and it's instantly at the
Shutter/Aperture combo that it would have used in P - I can then use that as
a starting point to quickly set the shutter/aperture I want.
*Handling - the body feels right in my hand, the buttons and dials are all
in the right place. It's a camera I can use by feel - I can change a lot of
things without having to remove the camera from my eye.
Things I dislike about it:
*Lack of highlight dynamic range - I find I frequently have to go to -1
exposure to keep highlights such as cloud detail (to be fair, I haven't
struck a digital camera that hasn't had this problem, and I've used a lot).
*ISO not displayed in viewfinder - very minor gripe, and if you are in Sv
mode it is displayed while you are changing it. It would be nice if it would
display the selected ISO constantly though. Even if it replaced the
remaining shots display.
*I would like approx 3 preset user modes for saturation/contrast/sharpness,
so I could switch to a "velvia" mode, then to a more neutral "astia" mode,
etc. Another very minor gripe, since it doesn't take long to alter these
settings anyway.
*The wife likes it so much I don't get to use it as much as I'd like to, and
I can't afford a 2nd one.

As for lens, I find I use my old 50/2 much more than I used to on my film
camera. It gets a good workout, so I'm in the market for a newer AF 50/1.4.
Surprisingly, I find my 28-80/3.5-5.6 off my old film camera is a very handy
focal length, but unfortunately it's not the best of lenses, so I'm keeping
my eyes open for something of around the 24-70/2.8 or similar range soonish.
I'd like something of a bit better quality than the kit lens (although
having used Canon kit lenses, this one isn't too bad).
I've never had an ultrawide lens - 28 has been the widest I've had on film,
with 18 (basically the same) the widest I have on the digital. I frequently
find myself looking for something wider, so I'm tossing up between the
Pentax 10-17 Fisheye, Sigma 10-22 or Sigma 12-24. At this stage the 12-24 is
probably winning for usefulness, because I still use film, but it's quite a
few dollars dearer than the others..

Thanks in advance.

"yvon" - your first post ever, I see? Yet you speak with such
authority!

FTR, Pentax jpgs are a little soft on some models, but if you are
using enlargements that would get you to the point of noticing it, you
would be a *moron* to not be shooting RAW.

Are you that moron, yvon? And as for the "too hard to find lenses",
are you related to Stevie Wonder, perhaps?

Tyler, take a look at Doug Jewell's post. He's an actual *user* of
the camera. Also read the reviews at dpreview. imaging-resource,
etc. They are very good cameras.

Utter nonsense. I use both a *istD and a K10D and get excellent JPEGs.
You do need the intelligence to use the menu to adjust them to your
personal likes or dislikes, something other cameras also do, but this
guy is full of ****.

It's funny, but I had no trouble buying about 11 lenses. Several are
Sigma, one a Tokina, and one a Tamron, in addition to a few Pentax.
I'm back down to a more liftable seven now. I didn't check ot see
where the lenses were made, but they don't have any more QC problems
than any other lens series.

I have only had the K10D about a month, but will use it later this
morning to shoot photos for a magazine article, and again next weekend
to photograph a vintage sports car race series for two other magazine
articles.

Oh. Right. Pentax is dead. Like hell it is.

For much of 2007, the Pentax K10D was the top selling DSLR in Japan.
It is a hugely successful camera for Pentax and has consistently sold
at four or five times the expected numbers across Europe and Asia.

The standard "kit" 18-55mm zoom is not a bad lens, but the Pentax
16-45mm f/4 lens is optically very much better. It is a lot more
expensive than the "kit" lens, which is produced in huge quantities
and is therefore cheap.

I would strongly recommend the 16-45mm but if low cost is paramount,
the 18-55mm is not a bad lens and it is excellent value for money.

not really Canon and Nikon are way over Pentax in sells btw.

Nikon Corp., buoyed by the popularity of its D40 model, sold more digital
single-lens reflex cameras than rival Canon Inc. in the first half of 2007.

Nikon clinched a 47.5-percent share of the domestic market from January to
June, surpassing Canon's 36.5 percent, according to Tokyo-based market
research firm BCN Inc.

In the first half of this year, Pentax Corp. came in third at 6.7 percent,
followed by Sony Corp. at 4.5 percent and Olympus Corp. at 4.3 percent

Default oh I forgot

In May and June, however, Olympus moved up to third, led by its E-410 model,
which it claims is the world's "smallest, slimmest and lightest" digital SLR
camera.

So now Pentax is fourth ! Way to go !
