Default Pink Shoes

After I made the suggestion about not associating names with
"Shoot-In" entries, I was challenged by Alan Browne to submit
something to the program. Realizing that I haven't been out looking
for photo opportunities for quite a while (It's terribly hot in
Florida this time of year), I went out this morning in search of
something interesting and photographable.

I took a few shots. I haven't uploaded them yet, but I don't expect
to find anything of real merit. It's hard to find something when
you're looking, and I was determined to avoid the usual Florida shots
of birds, bugs, boats, and flowers.

On the way home, I stopped in a fast food restaurant for something to
eat and a much-needed cold drink. Sitting in the booth across from me
was an African-American family that included a little girl of five or
six. She had on a pair of bright pink shoes that I think are called
"wedgies". Heels (solid wedge) about 4" high and open-backed. (I'm
not really qualified to describe women's shoe styles)

The contrast of her dark skin and the pink shoes was eye-catching.
She sat in the booth with her feet not quite touching the floor and -
as little girls will- constantly moving, twisting her feet around and
dangling a shoe.

"There's a picture there", I thought, but I couldn't figure out a way
to approach the family and ask if I could take one. In this day and
age, you just don't ask people if you can photograph their young
daughter. There's no telling what they might think you have in mind,
especially if you want to photograph their daughter's feet. Pedophile
foot-fetishist comes to mind, and I didn't want that shouted out.

I left without a photo.

Explain and ask. Worst they'll say is no.

That's not the worst possible; if they are racist and hateful in that
moment, the parents may assume the worst and administer a sound
thrashing to what they see as a pedo. with designs on their daughter.

I think tony followed his intuition, and probably a good thing.

I doubt it. IAC I'd send him flowers if that happened...

Often. OTOH, no risk no gain.

See "That Rich" reply. Worst he got was having to save face by buying a
Quebec flag... in a city where holding a Quebec flag is begging to be
ostracized. Brave man, That Rich.

The family was very friendly. I did comment on the shoes and how
pretty the daughter looked. She had on a dress with a pattern that
included some color that was a perfect match for the shoes. She was
all dressed up, and the other children in the group weren't, so I
assume she'd been to, or was going to, some special event.

I think tony followed his intuition, and probably a good thing.

I hesitate on the safe side when taking pictures that include a
stranger's child in them. There's been a rash of people arrested here
with pedo files on their computers and its been in the news. We also
have a missing child that's attracting a lot of media attention.
(Caylee Casey)

I could have pulled out the D40 and showed them the 40 images that I'd
taken earlier in the day (that didn't include any children), but
there's no point in making anyone uncomfortable.

Horsecrap. I make it a point to speak English in public even in the
hard core separatist areas. Nobody says a boo. If they ask me to speak
French, I happily do so.

Could you learn to freaking snip?

I'm not trying to start a war Alan, I speak from experience. The

Yeah, the usual biased Ontario experience.

same thing happened to my brother and some friends of mine. If in fact
the attitudes from some in those hard core separatist areas have in
fact changed and Anglophones are treated with hospitality than I'll be
happy to go back and visit the province where I have roots.

Come any time, I'll meet you at Les Deux Pierrots and there begin your
cultural re-assimilation. (Although, frankly, LDP is not what it once
was...)

"Tour? Get your own damned tour."

^^^^ corrected... sigh.

I offered to take you to LDP and you reply with "I'd love a tour."

That's the problem with you Ontarians. Give you an inch and you want to
conquer an entire people.

Very welcoming attitude Alan.

Original offer stands.

FWIW I'll be visiting Quebec sometime in the Fall.

Just e-mail me and we'll try to sync.

Cheers,
Alan
