Default Nikon Coolpix 5900 a good choice?

Thinking about getting this camera for family home use. Good Idea?
What's your experience?

I've got one and I am happy of it, but I am really a newbie. I am just
wondering if the USB cable is a standard one. On camera's end the jack
looks very small.
Simone.

Have it, love it. It takes great pictures. Our film point-and-shoot died
after 13 years, so had to replace it :-). This camera does great unlimited
video as well. I like the feature that you can record voice comments for a
picture and store it with the camera. If you are looking for a lot of
control, this is probably not the best camera for you (e.g. no Manual Focus,
no F/stop control), but for point and shoot, love it. When I went into the
camera store, I told them that I wanted to do some macro-photography (or I
guess photomacrography to be correct ;-) ). They immediately showed me this
camera.

I think if I was to buy this camera I would think about the 7MP version
(Coolpix 7900). Not that you actually need this resolution, but it has a
few extras that might come in handy. One thing specifically, that my mom
heard in a photo class is that "Inside every picture is an even better
picture." With the extra MP, there is a little bit more you can "chop away"
and still have something left.

We bought a 1GB SD card right away and I wouldn't recommend anything less.
We've used the video to take videos of our childrens' piano recitals. It's
probably not the most ideal, but we've found it so convenient that it gets
used a lot for this. It took me a while to understand how close-ups work,
as far as making sure you have it in the right mode and realizing that when
you zoom in, you have to move farther away in order for the camera to be
able to focus correctly. I would say buy a good camera book. A couple of
my favorites are "John Shaw: Closeups in Nature" which has is an excellent
intro to photography and how F/Stop and Shutter speeds act and what effects
they produce. There is also a really good book on "How to Everything with
Digital Photography." The title sounds cheesy, but I would highly recommend
it.

Hope this is useful.

No, it is not "standard" on the camera end. I also have a Toshiba camera
and that is also different from the standard USB and the Nikon connectors.
