They just announced the price of the new Olympus E-M1 revision. It's $1999.00. The previous model was $1299.00. Prior to that, the most expensive body was the E-M5 which was about $1000 at introduction. That's only over a span of about 4 years. $2000 with a decent kit lens is more or less what you'll pay now for a middle-road camera and kit lens. This is just more evidence that the middle class is now a poor target for camera makers. For one reason, they've adopted smart phones, most don't see the difference so the "golden age" of DSLR's (2007-2012) is over. For another, the middle class's buying-power is now down, especially if you are younger than 30 years old, so that market is no longer worth pursuing the way it once was. So, we see introductions from cameras makers in and price increases designed to either maximize existing client revenue or to capture the upper middle and upper-class markets more than in the past. There have always been high-priced bodies, but they were primarily tools for professionals. A third reason however, does skew some pricing upwards, which is a move from the 18-55mm equivalent kit lenses to things like 18-135mm. Most of them are junk, but they do cost more, driving the body-kit prices higher. I picked up a Pentax (it had a particular feature I wanted to try) with a lens recently to tide me over until the new Olympus E-M5II revision is released. Despite the fact the camera is technically "entry-level" which with Pentax is like upper-entry from Nikon, the camera and the lens cost me $1400.00 U.S. 5 years ago, it's conceivable the same kit might have only cost $1000.00. Inflation is 2% so obviously, the camera makers are shifting gears. What does it mean? Well, it means if you are into expensive cameras and lenses, it's a good time for you. Despite the price increases we've seen on each new lens iteration from Nikon and Canon, they are releasing more high-end lenses to capture that upper-tier income market. Nikon just released 3 lenses whose prices range from $2000-$4500. You can still get a entry-level DSLR body and basic zoom lens for about $500 but the market is definitely moving up.

I'd opt for the Fuji X-T2 which the pros are all moving to as they go
mirrorless.
