Saw an announcement over on the Steve's Digicams website about it as
well. To quote one section from the press release "We've responded to
requests from enthusiasts for this type of camera, said Hiro
Takahashi, vice president for Sony Electronics' digital imaging
products." More like Sony saw how much business they were losing to
competitors and decided to whip out their own fixed lens big zoom IS
camera, priced in the same ballpark as the Panasonic FZ20.

But neither the picture of the camera nor the press release hypes the
lens quality on this model. Sony 12x f=6.0-72.0mm 1:2.8-3.7. So it
seem that this model lacks constant F2.8 brightness throughout the
entire zoom range. I can't help but think this will be a factor in
how well it will fare when reviewers begin testing and posting their
results.
