Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 D
Anyone using this lens? Do you love it? The reviews by Ken Rockwell
are fantastic, although the site seems to say the same thing about all Nikon lenses, so I am not sure how much to read into that. I have the 17-55 f/2.8 already, and I'm concerned a little about the gap in focal length (55-80). Its going on a Nikon D2Hs. Comments appreciated. Thanks! Dean |

Not only is the gap smaller, but it's easier to handhold because of the VR. |

If I was after a tele zoom then the 80-200 AF-D would seem the best value. It's lighter than the 70-200 and a simpler design with less elements and less than half the price. Ones I've seen look less plasticy than the AS-S 80-200 model. |

I sold mine to gett he 70-200, and have noticed no significant increase in optical quality. AND you lose the aperture ring, so no macro. Here's a sampling of the 80-200 2.8 D: http://www.pbase.com/sirchandestroy/image/66589032 http://www.pbase.com/sirchandestroy/image/67053057 http://www.pbase.com/sirchandestroy/image/64728114 (macro w/ 27.5mm extension tube) http://www.pbase.com/sirchandestroy/image/64863503 I am actually looking to buy a used one for the incredible macro capabilities. Anyway, I can't receommend this lens strongly enough... Ben |

Its minor shortcoming is described in my Nikkor evaluation list, here -- www.donferrario.com/ruether/slemn.html, but this same shortcoming is shared by several non-zoom Nikkors in its range. BTW, the excellent sample tried is FS for just over $500 in mint condition with box, pictured here -- www.donferrario.com/ruether/fs-zooms.htm. -- David Ruether www.donferrario.com/ruether/ (note address change) |

I'm not sure how this compares with the later 2 ring AF-D version though: http://www.pbase.com/image/25093268 cheers adrian www.boliston.co.uk |
