Default Canon 1v: problem with data transfer

I've been using the Canon ES-E1 link software to DL shooting data from my 1V
to a computer with Windoze 98. I tried loading the software to my Win XP
computer. I guess the software loaded, but when I plugged in the cable, I
was asked to re-insert the CD, then told it was not necessarily compatible
and might cause problems with the OS. I called Canon, who said they don't
support that product for newer computers.

I may have to replace my Win 98 system. Has anyone tried this
software/hardware on a Win XP or Vista device?
