[OT] UIP and filters (Was: FUNNY PICS LOVE THE 40D!)

But you are quoting a URL with a particular philosophy that you are not adopting. You'd be more correct if you left your philosophy there in your sig and removed the URL, or actually embrace the philosophy of the UIP and killfile based on M-IDs. Your sig is misleading. Thunderbird (the best compromise for my use) cannot filter but on a few parameters such as subject and from. That is imperfect, but allows removal of @gmail.com and @googlemail.com for example. I understand that. But what I was talking about was that the person I was following up to was quoting a URL to http://improve-usenet.org/ in their sig. The UIP is not about filtering based on email addresses, it's about filtering based on User-Agent being googlegroups. I was merely pointing out that UIP was being misrepresented, but believe the sig has since been amended. TB's filtering is not really that useful on it's own. But if you run a local newsproxy like Hamster or NewsProxy, which you can setup to do some very powerful filtering, it's much better. More he Do you mean that that will filter before TB gets the news from the newsserver? Yes. You run the proxy program which downloads news articles from your usual news server. The proxy program has a filter file, where you can set up rules or scores. Depending on what you like and don't like to read, you can assign positive or negative scores. If at the end of passing all those rules an article has a negative score, it doesn't get downloaded. If it's positive, it does. Then you just set up TB to read news from your local proxy instead of the actual newsserver. TB won't even see anything that got a negative score. -- Troy Piggins I always appreciate critique. |

Alan Browne wrote: Gotcha. I'd need the same sort of thing for Max OS X. I'll look into it. MT-NewsWatcher runs on a Mac...has kick@ss filtering, without the need to pre-chew the newsfeed. AFWIW, it filters on Message ID which TB either can't, or will never be capable of doing. I think TB3 is going to have much reworked filtering capabilities, from what I've read at bugzilla. I certainly hope so. And anything would be an improvement from its current filtering brain-deadness. I pointed them to Pan, which has essentially the same filtering syntax as slrn and Xnews (and undoubtedly other clients), and which is very flexible. -- Blinky Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://improve-usenet.org Need a new news feed? http://blinkynet.net/comp/newfeed.html |

I generally like TB despite a few quirks. Don't like Xnews much although it has that 'raw' uncluttered feel that I like. The menus are badly thought out. Don't use it and I don't believe it is supported anymore in any case. Someone should grab the source and give it a good makeover. It's not compiled for Mac OS X either... Agent is supposed to be pretty good, but also not compiled for Mac. -- -- r.p.e.35mm user resource: http://www.aliasimages.com/rpe35mmur.htm -- r.p.d.slr-systems: http://www.aliasimages.com/rpdslrsysur.htm -- [SI] gallery & rulz: http://www.pbase.com/shootin -- e-meil: Remove FreeLunch. -- usenet posts from gmail.com and googlemail.com are filtered out. |

Luu has repeatedly said that he will not release the Xnews source. Agent is supposed to be pretty good, but also not compiled for Mac. And it's not a strong filterer, either. It requires one of the same news proxies to pre-chew groups for it that TB does.
