The sad thing is that secretly we all know this.

I don't mind admitting that for the first year or so after I buy a new
camera I find my pictures are not as good as those which I took with
my previous camera. Some of my best pictures are those I took with my
Sony F707 http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydscf707/

I still have my Sony F707 with its (relatively) low pixel count
sensor and superbly sharp f2-f2.5 zoom (it's sharp to the corners
wide open, and similarly sharp with a .8x Olympus WA at the short
end). I'm currently using stills from it and a Panasonic ZS7 in a
1920x1080 60p video, although it is more difficult to turn the
F707 vertical frames into horizontals or to move through them and
keep a sharp image in the video than with the ZS7...).
