Megabytes to Kilobytes

Could anyone please help me????? I'm trying tp convert a photo from megabyte
size to kilobyte size so that I can post it on a newserver site. It won't
let me post a large photo in th Mb range and I need to get down to approx.
200 Kb range. Is this possible? If so can anyone help me out.

Pretty much any picture software will allow you to resize an image..
Most give you a choice between size and percent change.

Virtually any photo/picture editor will let you do that.
You can typically crop the picture (publish only a portion of it),
decrease the resolution (lower pixel count width x height; most common
choice for your application), increase the compression ratio, or reduce
the color space (uncommon).

Langley near Slough? I'd be desperate too!

I use Paint.net, a free Windows app - you can choose the level of jpeg
compression and see the effect of that compression before saving it - nice.

In photoshop one would:

-reduce the size for display, these days, 1024 wide would be typical
(run an unsharp mask at that size).
-convert the image to 8 bit format
-save the file as a JPG 7 or 8 level quality.

That will do it in most cases.

You shoot a dslr, given this post is to rec.photo.digital.slr-systems and
you can't figure this out, let alone even tell folks what OS you run, nor
what image editing programs you have?

You need to buy a new Nikon D3 just like the one Rita has, it makes
"fabulous" images that are no more than 1024 x 768 pixels which is just in
the range you are looking for.

You can do all that in seconds using Irfan View, and it's free... and it will
even batch process all of a directory if you want...

You can resize the image to screen size, say 1024 x 768 or so, and then set the
"save jpeg quality" down to 70% or so and save it that way.

Don't forget to give a new name so you don't trash your original files.

(Irfan will also re-name the files if you want in batch mode.)
