Coolpix 2100 autofocus

My daughter lost our Nikon Coolpix 2100 while on vacation. We really
liked it, so I bought another one on eBay. On our old one, when you
push the button half way down the camera focuses and then the AF LED
lights. On the used one I just bought, nothing seems to happen when
pushing the button half way down, but when pressed all the way down,
the camera focuses, the AF LED and flash LED come on briefly, then it
takes the picture. It takes nice sharp pictures, but I was wondering
why it acts differently than my old one. Mid-model production change?
Defect? Set-up differently (not likely)? As far as I can tell,
because of the way the new one works, I can not use the focus lock
feature that I had on my old one.

Your old one was working correctly, but the one you found on ebay isn't.
