Fuji - film is here! (as opposed to Kodak CEO's "film is gone" statement)
Fuji seem to be the only reliable choice left for film right now. After
Ilford had their problems I tried out acros 100 and have stuck with it and not gone back to Ilford. Acros is excellent, I dev it in pyrocat hd. I still use kodak tri-x and portra 160vc/nc. I use XTOL a lot to dev tri-x too. I hope kodak doesn't get rid of them. |

Meanwhile Konica Minolta packs it in:
Reuters today: TOKYO, Jan. 19 (Reuters) - Konica Minolta Holdings said on Thursday it would withdraw from the camera and color film businesses, ending one of the best-known brands in the photography world. As part of the surprise move, Konica Minolta said it would sell a portion of its digital single-lens reflex camera assets to the Sony Corporation for an undisclosed sum and cease production of compact cameras by March. |

I use ACROS regularly and soup it in my 3-ingredient homebrew which I
mix fresh (takes 2 minutes) each time and use it as a one-shot or two-shot if I've got enough film to soup to need two runs. I call it PCC (Phenidone, Vitamin C, and Carbonate). I use the teaspoon measurement method for the dry chemicals. The Phenidone I mix up in a 1% stock solution (1/2 tsp. Phenidone in 100 ml. 90% alcohol.) Before developing, I put 1 tsp (5 g) Carbonate and 1/2 tsp (4 g Vitamin C crystals) in a liter of water, stir till dissolved (very fast), and then add 2.5ml of the Phenidone stock. Develop at 70 degrees for 7 1/2 minutes for beautiful ACROS negs (Rated at ISO 50 because I almost always use a yellow filter over my lens.) I like fuji. Currently going through a brick of Acros 100. Good stuff although more easily scratched than, let's say, hp5+ but that could just be me. Whatcha zouping it in? |

I'm still new at this stuff. How did you figure this all out? And
where can I get these ingredients? Phenodine doesn't sound like something I can pick up at the grocery. |

Photographers Formulary or Artcraft Chemicals -both on the web google them. -- "To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."--Theodore Roosevelt, May 7, 1918 greg_____photo(dot)com |

There are many books with formulas.
Look for an old copy of the Photo Lab Index from about 1940-1955. Also see Photographic Facts and Formulas by Wall. You need an Ohus triple-beam scale. Most developers for paper use: Sodium Sulphite Sodium Carbonate Metol Hydroquinone Potassium Bromide Most developers for film use: Sodium Sulphite Borax or Sodium Carbonate Metol or Phenidone Hydroquinone Potassium Bromide Very small amounts of most of these are used (1-5 g/l), except carbonate for paper developers and sulphite for both. 100g quanities will suffice for most purposes, but sulphite and carbonate should be bought in kilogram quantities or better to get a decent price. Excellent. The rabbit hole goes deeper and deeper. Kind of scary
knowing I'm moving "backwards" in terms of technology. Just yesterday at B&H the consumer electronics/digital camera sections were JAM packed while I was one of maybe two customers walking around the darkroom section. There was a surprising number of people in the used department though, with an even mix of people looking for dslrs, mf, and 35mm gear. |

It is neither backward nor forward. It is chemically-based, using
silver salts. Dave the Guy wrote: Excellent. The rabbit hole goes deeper and deeper. Kind of scary knowing I'm moving "backwards" in terms of technology.
