FA: "Ralph Eugene Meatyard, American Visionary," a scarce book
"Ralph Eugene Meatyard was one of only a few photographers who had any sort of influence on my "photographic" roots ... I believed in his bizarre, fictional world." - Cindy Sherman "Meatyard's work continues to have resonance today, particularly for young people. Working in the 1960s, he seemed to be struggling for a civil rights of the imagination." -- Emmet Gowin An influential photographer for many today, Ralph Eugene Meatyard (1925-1972) attained only marginal status during his lifetime. He was a devoted family man and an optician, who owned his own optical shop in Lexington, Kentucky. Meatyard's mentor at the Lexington Camera Club was Van Deren Coke, who taught photography as vehicle for personal expression. Meatyard was influenced by Minor White and, upon White's recommendation, began reading about Zen. An American Surrealist, Meatyard's work hones in on middle-class values with sharp wit. "Ralph Eugene Meatyard: An American Visionary," is considered by many the best and most complete book on Ralph Eugene Meatyard. It is no longer in print. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...e=STRK:MESE:IT |
