Default Photoshop problem - huge "stepped" panos

I have encountered some weird behavior of CS3. When using the photomerge
command to create a pano from about 17 photos, CS3 chugs along for
about an hour or two then after getting the pano assembled it either
freezes up or it just shuts down (one second I'm looking at PS, the next
second I'm looking at my desktop).

The panos that I am making are very large. I am trying to stitch
multiple DOQQ images (aerial images) of the Louisiana coast. They are
..jpg files and are each approximately 6800 x 7700 pixels. I finally gave
up CS3 and stitched the images with PTGUI, which worked pretty well. I
saved the image as a 20,000 x 20,000 (400 megapixel) .jpg, then opened
it with CS3. Three times now, during different operations, CS3 shut down
without any warning.

I am running an Intel Q6600 processor with 4gb of 1066 ram in dual
channel mode on an ASUS motherboard with two 500gb SATA hard drives in a
striped RAID array and an additonal 1tb hard drive, both with plenty of
available space.

Any ideas what's wrong? Is there some limit to the image sizes that CS3
will work with or is there some memory settings that I should be trying?

I am trying to adjust color and contrast, label places and geographic
features and then get a 60in x 60in image printed for my wall.

PS: If you would like to attempt to stitch an image like this, the DOQQ
images can be found at:

Just out of curiosity, have you tried some other photo editing software?
Maybe GIMP, orphanview, etc.

I haven't really had time to do that but I plan to give the GIMP a shot at
the editing over the weekend. Nevertheless, I would still like to find out
if there is something I can do to help Photoshop handle a file of this size.

Could you give me the links to the specific images? I'll try it on the
Mac v. of CS3.

May try Gimp as well.

I downloaded one of those 150 Meg TIFFs. It seems to be itself a
stitched image.

After about 20 minutes it had correctly tiles 9 images or so (out of 17
layers), then the CPU rolled off to near 0 for the CS3 process. Nothing
seems to be happening now.

I've just re-launched it and I'll fire up Gimp to see how it does
pano/mosaics. (Never tried it in Gimp).

The limits of CS3 are 300,000 x 300,000 pixels, see

http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/view...nalId=kb401088

so you have another problem. You could try increasing your page file size.

I can't find how to do it in Gimp. Anyone?
