lens recommendations for Rebel XTi ?

I just ordered the Canon Rebel XTi (a.k.a.400D as it is known in
europe) camera body. Can any of you recommend a couple of good lenses?
I would like the USM type of lens, quiet, and with a good range like
28mm-300mm or something close to that. The reason being I do lots of
spontaneous shooting of models and need to be able to zoom in/out,
compose a shot on the moment rather than switch lenses.

You are in luck. Canon makes the EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM lens.
