Although, just like anywhere else on the internet, you will need to weed
through some comments.

Hello.

Do you mean the manual focus or autofocus lens?

I've used the manual focus (late version) a lot and found it light and
useful .. useful enough for me to leave the much heavier 24mm breechlock
lens at home.

Regards, Ian.

Breechlock? ;-)

What's one of them?

Hi Ali.

Try doing a search for "Canon" and "Breechlock". It is an old Canon lens
mount and a search should get you pages of info about its use and virtues.

Regards, Ian.

I quite like it. Canon also makes a 28mm f/1.8 lens that is not too
expensive. 28mm is normal on the 1.6 crop cameras.

I find the 28 f/2.8 to be nice and small and light, focuses quick and is
pretty sharp even wide open. It has fairly low distortion at longer
distances, but near the close focussing limit it develops some barrel
distortion that you can fix with the Photoshop lens distortion filter. It
is only $169 at Adorama for a new one so you can't expect everything but at
the price it is very good. The hood is a good idea for it. The front
element extends a little during focussing but does not rotate so you can
don't have to re-adjust your polarizer after focusing.

The kit lens is f/4 at 28mm so the 28mm f/2.8 will give you twice the light
and allow shallower depth of field if desired. It also uses little 52mm
filters so they are cheaper too.

Consider also the 50mm f/1.8 II which lets in ten times as much light as the
kit lens which is f/5.6 at 50mm and it is only $69.95 new at Adorama. It's
Canon's lightest (130g), smallest and least expensive lens. Optically it is
quite good even though it looks and feels pretty cheap.

My experience with these lenses is on a Rebel XT which doesn't see the outer
parts of the image circle so they may not be as good on a Canon 1 series or
5D camera, I don't know.
