Not even Pentax. I have owned an M42 screw mount Spotmatic, and I still have my K1000. There are compatibility issues with K mount lenses which came into play with the introduction of AF. They also have issues similar to Nikon with AF drive motors and metering. This has resulted in modification of the K mount over the years, with no guarantee of backward compatibility. That's overstating it. Using current Pentax DSLR bodies, there is at least some backward compatibility with virtually every Pentax lens ever made. What? Compatible with the pre-WW2 Exacta mount? All the screw mount lenses fit with a screw-to-K-bayonet adapter and give stopped down aperture priority AE. All K mount lenses fit and offer full aperture priority AE. All KA lenses fit and offer shutter priority and program AE as well as aperture priority AE. All K AF mount lenses fit and offer shutter priority, program and aperture priority AE plus autofocus, but the power zoom feature of some early AF lenses doesn't work. I'm pretty sure the above is right but would welcome any corrections. So that's virtually every Pentax lens ever made, and they all work on the latest DSLRs, just with some limitation on exposure modes. I think that is probably about the best backward compatibility of any DSLR brand. People who bought Nikon F and Canon FL and FD lenses at the same time Pentax users were buying Takumars, Super Takumars and SMC Takumars must look on longingly at the Pentax screw lenses in use on 21st century Pentax DSLRs. Of course these people must be very old by now ... ;-) Eric Stevens |

... What? Compatible with the pre-WW2 Exacta mount? My first SLR was an Exacta Vx II with a 50mm Schneider lens. I wanted an SLR. My then criteria was because it was the camera used in the movie Rear Window, it must be good. -- Peter |

I have been doing some research and discovered that some of the leter post WW-2 Exactas used a 'K' mount of a type used by many camera manufacturers, including the early Pentax. That's where I was getting confused. It was a standard screw mount but it wasn't Exacta's. My apologies for misleading you. Eric Stevens |

I really never knew whether or if, my Exacta was compatible with other lenses. I shot a roll at the bullfights that all had a black streak on them. I brought the camera to Willoughby's and the lying *******s told me the shutter needed to be replaced. I went elsewhere and traded in the camera for a Nikkormat, with the worst lens Nikon ever made, but it was good for snapshots of my kids. (43 -86) It was later that I found out that the black streak was probably caused by my camera strap dangling in front of the lens. -- Peter |
