Does anyone have any suggestions about which program is good/best for
editing raw photos? |

I've heard of a program called Photoshop that is supposed to be good for
that. |

Hi Dick,
AFAIK, except for the few cameras using Adobe's DNG format, there are no image editing programs that edit RAW files, per se. Apart from the Adobe DNG exception, none of the editors saves the edited file in the original RAW format - they all save to TIFF, JPEG, etc, or to another proprietary format. They attach the information about editing to the raw file so that when opened again with the same software that saved information is used to display the image. If you are using Canon then DPP will do that. LightZone and Photoshop can do that as well. There could be other programs that can do it. -- gautam |

As noted above, the software doesn't edit the raw file (and you don't really want to - in case you mess up or decide later to apply different effects). It will apply effects / filters to your original raw file and allow you to save it to a tiff or jpeg for viewing, printing or further editing. Having said that, I recommend Photoshop Elements for both raw processing and further editing. I have been using Elements 5.0 for some time and am really pleased with it. The cost of Elements is considerably lower than the full Photoshop and does everything you need short of professional publishing. Elements 6.0 can be had on E-bay for around $100 and 5.0 can be had for about $50 (just be aware that you are not buying a video or tutorial DVD/CD) Bill |

I use it all the way from import to output , such as prints and high resolution tiffs for delivery to my clients etc. Of course u might need to use photoshop or some other prg now and then depending on the work atm. My advise is that you download some trial versions of different RAW converters, try them out and see which one suits your needs. |

Just curious. Do some cameras that allow photographing in RAW format, not provide software to edit those files? I recently bought an Olympus E-510 and 2 software programs came with it and both can edit RAW. I am considering Photoshop but decided to try these programs for a while before purchasing. So far I'm happy with the software but imagine there are advantages to Photoshop that are not available in them. Charlie |
