You have a lot to chose from. Canon has 60, 100 & 180 mm lenses. Sigma has
50, 70, 105 & 180 mm. And Tamron has 90 and 180 mm. Which one you chose
will depend on your subject, pocketbook and strength of the arm muscles.

In general, shorter the FL, shorter the working distance, cheaper and
lighter is the lens. For stittish insects you may need a longer FL but for
flowers and other static objects and short FL is OK.

* Squibbly is quoted & my replies are inline below :
can anyone suggest a lense for macro shots on this camera?

Depends heavily on your budget and what you want to shoot. I
recently went through this decision process, and I ended up
reading the forums at http://photography-on-the.net - go to the
equipment, lenses forum and look in the top few sticky posts
(can't remember exact URL ATM). There is a FAQ with the top ten
lenses for several categories, and macro is one of them. That
will show you the most popular macro lens used by readers of that
forum, and it is by far and away the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
lens.

Also read the rest of the lens forum, and have a look in the
photo sharing macro forum also. That helped me decide.

Sigma also have a 150mm "HSM" macro.
Photozone tests of optical quality show that it is second to none in MTF
center-frame and edge frame (on Nikon D200 dx sensor), almost no CA at
all, and it has "USM" / AF-s (HSM in Sigma-speak) so instant manual
override of autofocus without using a switch or clutch, and the lens is
IF (internal focus) so that it stays a constant length, and it has a
tripod mount.
I would buy one of these as "first choice" over any of the OEM or third
party 90-105mm lenses, as optical quality is at least as good or better,
price is better, and the extra focal length is almost always an advantage.

imo the "longer" macros (100 - 180) are easier to work with as you have
more stand off range than, eg, a 50mm.

The Tamron 90mm is an excellent macro and very good portrait lens as
well. (At least the FF f/2.8 was... not sure with the "digital" sized
lenses).

Cheers,
Alan
