FYI: Photokina starts tomorrow

Photokina is the classic venue for introducing new photographic
equipment. These days there are competitors trying to lure exibitors
away with free drinks 'n stuff in L Vegas and such but the event in
Cologne is still the original and real deal.

All lot of anouncements are now taking place the weeks before the main
event, but you never know: This could be the time for Nikon to introduce
a proper MILC!

Haven't seen a lot of new camera announcements recently. Generally if
they're going to be at Photokina, you hear about them beforehand.

This brings back many memories of the 1956 Photokina that I attended in
Cologne. I saw the Contax S there, the first SLR camera, with a glass
pentaprism, as well as Russian produced "German" cameras. The Russians
simply carted off the machinery from Germany at the end of W.W.II. Thus
there were 2 Zeiss companies: one in East Germany(Jena),and one in West
Germany(Oberkochen).

I still had the original catalog until last year, when I sold my house
and had to throw out many things, including that catalog.

I was a Zeiss dealer for many years, but the Zeiss product line I
distributed was the operating microscopes used in surgery.

I visited the Oberkochen factory years ago and met several of the
Zeiss employees who were relocated from Jena (which is in the East
German sector) at the end of the war.

When the Army convoy left Jena the intent was to set up operations in
Heidelberg, but they ran out of gas and, instead, set up at a school
in Oberkochen. The gasoline supply trucks had been diverted to other
areas by the Army.

The East German company was not allowed to use the Zeiss name, but did
sell products under the name of Aus Jena.

They sold SLRs under the Practica brand. I had one of those for a while,
got it used with a Takumar 100/2.8. Loved that lense. Got a 85/1.9 for
the 1D2 now, love that one too.

Thanks for the additional memories.

The Jena company did use the name Zeiss in the east bloc, but not in the
west. That Contax S was named Zeiss, and I saw it in West Germany and
Holland at that time. When I bought my medical microscope in 1953, I got
a new Leitz in Munich, as the Jena 'scopes were said to be of somewhat
lesser quality then. A brand new Leitz medical microscope with monocular
and binocular heads, 4 objective lenses plus 2 oil immersion lenses plus
3 pairs of ocular lenses, projection prism, and fine wooden case, cost a
total of $310.- USD. Those were the days.
