Default ANNOUNCEMENT: Foveon F19 Sensor

Orville Wright wrote:
Finally the coveted Foveon technolgy is being made available to
compact camera market. I love my SD10, but it would be nice to have a
small compact for when I don't want to carry my heavy camera bag
around. This new sensor incorporates Foveon's breakthrough X3
technology to directly capture color in three layers, just like film.
I really feel sorry for Sony investors.

Hope this helps,

How about they make their 3.1MP chip cheaper and market that to all the
current 3MP makers out there at the moment. I can half see their point in
multiplying their sensor size by 3, but then again, it doesn't really cut
it. We've grown accustomed to measuring the sensor in output size. I guess
something more along the lines of "3MP size, 10MP accuracy" would be more
like it.

I can't see anyone wanting to buy a 1MP camera, even if it does produce
awfully sharp pictures.

Perhaps they should be focusing on the 6MP or higher REAL size sensors
instead.

No, it wouldn't. It is not 3x as accurate. The current Foveon sensor
has 2268*1512 pixels (3.43MP). Each pixel measures three color bands,
which overlap by much more than an ideal amount, and don't have a
bell-curve response, so it is actually very difficult to separate some
blues from greens from greys; hence yellow blotches in skin, and green
or magenta blotches in blue sky. The Foveon is actually less accurate
than Bayer DSLRs in rendering consistent, accurate color. What it *is*
better at, on a pixel-for-pixel basis, is resolving fine detail of red
vs blue, or red vs green, when the colors are highly saturated. This
almost never appears in real life, though, and even if it did, you
usually don't want to see it because it causes flashing.

almost 2 mp...

an even smaller sensor then the obsolete foveon x3.
even that is only 2500 x 1500.

modern sensors are about 3 times the resolution.

The SDx cameras output image resolutions that are on a par with any 6
MP Bayer sensor camera despite whatever resolution label you place on
it. Numbers mean nothing, the output is what matters.

Even if they did produce comparable images, there is not a real price
advantage for the SD10 over the Canon 10D or Nikon D70, not to mention the
Digital Rebel. Since the Sigma isn't as well built, and the lens line is
limited (though it does include some esoteric lenses that the others don't
offer, like a 200-400 and a 50-500) there really isn't a good reason to buy
the camera unless you already have Sigma mount lenses.
And those esoteric lenses are available in other manufacturers' mounts,
too...

They are only on a par with some 6 Mpixel SLRs under certain conditions. Low
ISO, brightly lit scenes are the only times when and SD10 comes close to
even an EOS-300D. And the SD9 is hopelessly bad.

Numbers mean nothing, the output is what matters.

This has been Foveon's/Sigma's biggest problem.

Are all Sigma owners this annoying ? So now you solved the camera puzzle.
Lets get back to a serious solution for that stupid lens mount.

if you think 22500 x 1500 = 3000x2000 from the sensor...

It is my understanding that Polaroid abandoned digital cameras a while

back.

Guess not. :-)

Definitely not. Take a look at dpreview.com's review of the SD-9 and 10.
Skin tones look excellent to me.
