Thanks for your help

Unfortunately, So far I have only selected these cameras from the
reviews. I really need to see them in the flesh to be sure

whilst I do have the right to inspect an online purchase, and send it
back if I am unhappy, I don't want to have to do that with a purchase of
this value (and this fragility) to a small, never heard-of-before type
company.

Neither of the two Amazon sellers are suitable for me to go an inspect
the camera on site (and one of them is suspiciously cheap), so that
isn't an option.

In the UK, look for TZ100 (listed by Currys).

currently out of stock for home delivery or collect at store

==========================

Yes, I appreciate that - it was seeing a Panasonic GX7 which a friend
had which made me replace my Nikon D5200 DSLR with the GX7 and I've
never looked back, quite frankly. I have a 10:1 zoom for normal use,
plus a 16-32 mm (equivalent) zoom and 16 mm fisheye in the gadget bag,
which previously just had room for the Nikon and 10:1 zoom! I have a 20
mm pancake (40 mm eq.) and a 100-300 mm zoom (200-600 eq.) available.
I've been pleased with the image quality from all these lenses.

Noted on the suppliers: I've had no problems returning faulty or
incorrectly described stiff to Amazon directly (didn't appreciate it was
non-Amazon stock), nor from a German vendor when a bag didn't really
meet the description. You /should/ have no problems. Likely your local
Currys/PC World/Dixons might have a GX7 in stock for you to handle. My
wife liked mine enough that she changed from Nikon to Panasonic GX7 too.

How usable is the LCD in bright sunlight?

I manage by using one hand as a sort of light shield. In extreme cases,
I take a photo and then review it on screen in the shade.

Hi,

I'm looking to replace my trusty DSLR with a prosumer compact for my
travelling

currently, it's a toss up between:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100

and

Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II

Follow up

well here we are 5 months later and the Canon is just now arriving in
warehouses in quantities greater than 1.

Arranged to go and look at one in store on Friday. Hope it's still there
when I arrive

:-)

God job I didn't need a new camera for Xmas

Both of which were released to the market in May 2016.

But neither of them seem to be available via the usual channels in the UK
yet (except via a company who appears to specialise in gray imports)

Is there any way that I can find out about the progress of their
availability here?

(any suggestions for alternatives considered)

TIA

Hi Tim,

The screen viewing can be troublesome in direct sunlight, helped somewhat
by using my hand as a sunshade. That is certainly not unique to this
camera. When in doubt, I shoot wide angle, and then crop later in my
laptop. I used to carry 14 pounds (6½ kilos) of Nikon or Olympus SLR film
equipment, and now as an octogenarian, I can do most of what I need with
the one camera, namely the Canon G7X II.

thanks Mort

The problem with using the viewfinder in bright light was (one of) the
reason(s) that my previous digital compact found itself in the junk drawer
15 years ago. I was hoping that the moveable screen would go some way to
alleviate that problem

also I'm not sure if this model has an electronic viewfinder or not, which
would also help

Both of which are the reason why I want to try before I buy

No need to answer, I am off to see it in a few hours
