Default How many pro photogs in the US?

I'm curious. How many pro photogs are there in the US?

Let's set the meaning to be photographers who earn their living through
photography.

As follow up, how many of these are portrait/wedding/studio photogs?

Cheers,
Alan.

Are you asking as in a poll for the group or do you want someone to google
up an answer?

I know some people who are pro, but still have to "work" for a living. Does
that count?

Bureau of Labor Statistics says
http://www.bls.gov/emp/optd/optdtabiii_1.pdf

130 thousand photographers in 2002, 148k in 2012. 52% self employed.

hi alan.
thats a pretty tough one to pin down an answer for i'm sure..
the ASMP has 5000 members spanning 40 chapters, and 37 countries (i
belive the 5000 is referencing the ones based in america but not sure)
and that would assume too much to think that only 5k reside here i
would think.

doing a search on yellowpages.com for "photographer"
came up with this:
http://tinyurl.com/8rboq
which is way more thank 5k

changing the word photographer to photography came up with this:
http://tinyurl.com/dnh56
still far beyond 5k (and the results at first glance look VERY similar
to the first links results so it may have adjusted for both forms of
the words.
when looking at the results, keep in mind, alot of those are business
types, and may have more than 1 "pro" in house.

heres copy/paste of the personal section of the listing:

Personal Services
Miscellaneous Personal Services
- Computer Photography Or Portrait (252)
Photographic Studios & Photographers
- Passport Photographer (488)
- Photographer Still & Video (30807)
- Photographic Studios, Portrait (9665)
- School Photographer (47)
- Transient Photographer (1)
- Wedding & Home Photographer (369)

and heres the business services list:
Brokers Services
- Photography Brokers (32)
Commercial Photography
- Aerial Photographers (514)
- Color Separation, Photographic & Movie Film (113)
- Commercial Photography (4626)
- Photographic Studios Commercial (488)
- Still & Slide File Production (27)
Miscellaneous Business Services
- Photographic Library Service (2)
Photofinishing Laboratories
- Photographic Services (673)

i didnt include wholesalers, camera and video epuipment sales, and a
few others as they arent what your asking about..

dunno if this is what you expected.. but HTH
cheers.

What's the difference between a pro photographer and a large pizza?

A large pizza can feed a family of four.

Google has not been a very good source...

Nope. I'm mainly curious about those who pay their way through life
with photography.

Much better datapoint than what I had (yellow pages online) which has
67,157 "photographer" business listings (which could have more than 1
photog per business as well while not being inclusive of all
professional photogs).

Cheers,
Alan

A statewise comparison of state pop. v photographers (using super pages
for photog and wiki for population) shows that there is a range of
between 6811 pop/photog (MS) to 2458 pop/photog (HI), the average is
around 4000 pop/photog by state. So markets like MS don't have enough
photogs (or more likely, not enough people/businesses use photographers).

The above is "yellow page" listings for "photographer" which of course
is not a very precise definition...

Cheers,
Alan

Not if I'm sitting at the table it can't. And don't try and divert my
attention with wings, dots, bread sticks, cheesysticks, or bits of
pizza dipped in cinnamon that they try and pass off as cake.

I load 3 sliced onto my plate and then proceed to eat slices directly
from the box. I can usually snag 1/2 to 2/3 that way. It's a trick I
learned from my Grandmother.
