Whisky-dave wrote: All our macs needed boards or cards for it, with BNC connectors and T pieces. then your macs were very old. Ypu mean LCs and the Macpluses the mac plus came out in 1986 and the lc in 1990, both predating when ethernet was on logic boards. macs started to include ethernet on the logic board in 1991, no additional card needed. Not all of them only the higher end ones. midrange too. I remember installing them in the PDS slots , you had to remove plastic part at the back. for low end models, sure. for others, it was on the logic board, no additional cards needed. pcs didn't start including ethernet on the logic board until *much* later and even longer until it was common. they were late on wifi too, for that matter. |

Not everyone need them, not everyone needed a sports car either. that would explain why the command line is so incredibly popular today. That has nothing to do with it. Pens and pencil are still used today. far more use computers than pencils. yeah sure... keep believing that. https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/22...day-sales.html how many handwritten letters have you sent or received lately, especially written in pencil? students now take notes on laptops or tablets. correspondence is via email or texting. Not everyone needed an idiot proof computer. everyone does, because most people do stupid things and then blame the computer. That will never change. exactly why a computer needs to be idiot-proof. Well Apple still haven't come up with a touchscreen computer, other than converting an iPad. nonsense. iphones and ipads are in every way touchscreen computers. it's also irrelevant since touch has nothing to do with being idiot-proof. Our lab PCs have touchscreens and cost us under £500 each. Apple still has a relatively small share of the computer market theres a reason. because of microsoft's illegal and predatory business practices, and market share has nothing to do with idiot-proof anyway. those that used the first computers did have brains and they knew how to use them. not really, since they came up with cobol. What computer languages were Made on a Mac that could be used on other systems ? several, but irrelevant. UNIX wasn't invented on a Mac. nobody said it was. |

Whisky-dave wrote: All laptops most bought external drives with them. nope. people used the duo standalone, without a dock or peripheral. whatever docks they had remained at home or work. The docks had a floppy drive, that was part of the point of them. only the full size dock had a floppy drive. it also had card slots. doesn't mean any of it was used. the minidock just added ports: https://www.oldcomputr.com/wp-conten...le_macintosh_d uo_minidock.jpg https://www.oldcomputr.com/wp-conten...le_macintosh_d uo_minidock-back.jpg https://www.oldcomputr.com/wp-conten...le_powerbook_2 300c-minidock-undocking.jpg third party docks also added ports, but in different combinations and usually fewer so that the dock was smaller. the various microdocks were quite popular, which added just one or two ports. Again more expense and general not worth it, the duo's didn't last long and were soon better models were out. duos lasted roughly 7 years, a lot longer than many other models, including the imac g3 and g4 *combined*. |

Students rarely take notes in lectures on anything. oh yes they do, on their laptops or tablets. Well Apple still haven't come up with a touchscreen computer, other than converting an iPad. nonsense. iphones and ipads are in every way touchscreen computers. So why do people buy computers if they can do everything on a phone or tablet, and other makes of phone and tablets have touchscreens too. nobody said someone can do everything on a phone or tablet. the fact remains that smartphones and tablets are computers. But Apple still don't have a desktop or laptop with a touchscreen why ? because it's a stupid idea. mac os was never designed for touch and shoehorning touch onto it is a guaranteed failure. Maybe soon they will. no they won't. what will do is offer a touch-based operating system that can also use a keyboard. it's called an ipad and also an iphone. Our lab PCs have touchscreens and cost us under £500 each. Apple still has a relatively small share of the computer market theres a reason. because of microsoft's illegal and predatory business practices, MS don't really make many laptops or computers. Our PCs are Dell. completely missing the point. and market share has nothing to do with idiot-proof anyway. Never said it did, what it proves is that not everyone wants to spend extra on a Mca when they can do what they want with a cheaper device. That;s why our lap has Dell PCs. it's a myth that macs cost extra. prices are competitive for similar specs. |

Whisky-dave wrote: But Apple still don't have a desktop or laptop with a touchscreen why ? Prhaps they remember the lesson of the first touchscreen computer, the HP 150 of 1983. Desktop touchscreen users frequently complained of repetitive stress injuries, reaching up from the desk level to manipulate the screen. Eventually, the feature was discontinued. Perhaps we get away with it now because most touchscreens are laptops with a lower reach, or tablets with effectively none. Or perhaps discriminating users prefer the more accurate pointer of a mouse or tablet. (GRIN) My blunt fingers STILL give me selection errors on my iPad. |

At what grade level? Do you have a website cite for your data? Is your data current? Does it take into consideration school closures due to COVID-19? Your experiences and observations are not universal. It's a big world out there, and the sooner you realize that others have opinions that may be just as valid as yours, the sooner you will be less of a noob. -- Ken Hart |
