rec.photo.equipment.slr-systems - NG charter reminder

om... "Bob Larter" wrote in message ... Um, you're talking about yourself again, kook. Just ignore it and talk to other people. You can't reason with or appeal to a kook, and responding to them just tears things down quicker. The problem with trolls is that they can bring down a newsgroup, if they are not ignored. The good people, who are the vast majority, simply get disgusted and leave. -- Peter |

Getting sucked in by the bait, spending more time with trolls than regular people, and getting too ****ed off and angry can screw you up *and* have a negative influence on everyone else even if that's not intended. This is how *one* troll can bring down an entire newsgroup. People keep getting hooked by the bait and, ironically, end up multiplying the problems. A group of trolls is a bigger problem but similar in principle. Nothing beats success, and there's **** all one or a million trolls can do if people stay focused and stick together. It can get get bad if there's enough trolls to high five each other and provide emotional support because it can become self-sustaining. That's rare but happens. Again, it's even more of a reason to stay focused and stick together. -- Charles E Hardwidge |

One problem is that so many people are not using a good newsreader that allows good filtering, including filtering on specific header attributes. So they just give up on Usenet, figuring the S/N ration is completely hopeless. People like Navas are easy to filter because they don't constantly change user names and e-mail addresses. The P&S troll requires more advanced filtering to eliminate. |

Hence the gentle reminder to respect charters of groups as well as those of "sister" groups and to stamp out trolls through the "ignore" doctrine. |

Tbird 3 (beta) behaved fine for a little while and then went bananas on me (Mac version) - I lost newsgroups and had to re-subscribe; lost filters, etc. Why filter Navas? It's quite entertaining to watch him corner himself. |

The problem is, little control freak resident-trolls that incessantly go off on little red-herring tantrums because they can't refute something, those are the ones that destroy a newsgroup. Consider yourself amongst that group. As are the rest that started and perpetuate this thread. |
