anybody familiar with this crowd?

I was searching for photo host sites a few weeks ago and found one called
http://www.photostockplus.com/

They insisted on seeing some of my stuff before they would give me info
about them, so I sent them a load of Irish scenic photos. Then tonight I
received this mail.

My name is Peter and I am a Pro Services Manager at www.photostockplus.com.
One of my editors has recently reviewed your work and has brought to my
attention that you have some powerful and beautiful nature/landscape
pictures of Ballintoy and Benevenagh.



We feel you can do very well with our site and we want to encourage you to
upgrade your account to PRO status. For only $24.95 a month or $99.95 a
year you will be able set pricing to all your images and sell them online
from your personal homepage modeled after your user name







I Googled it to see if was yet another scam but I can't find any negative
info about them. Has anybody worked with them or know anything about them?

mmm. Sounds more like a sales-tactic to me than anything else.

There are other sites which can provide the same services for less.

I have some pics hosted by http://www.favouritepictures.com and it
didn't cost me a cent !

I don't know anything about them, but I would think it's more of a
money maker for them than for you.

I once did some computer work for a really big international
stock photo agency. The way they worked was like this:

They only accepted photos from photographers they had vetted as
being top quality.

They gave those photographers contracts. The contract gave the
agency the right to sell specific rights to the photographer's
photos - as specified by the photographer. For example, the
photographer might be under contract to an auto company or
a calendar publisher and would specify that none of his photos
could be sold to any auto or calendar company.

The photographer sent in whatever he wanted, no charge. The
agency would sell the images when they could, keep half the money,
and give the other half to the photographer.

It was a no risk proposition for the photographer.

The company you are dealing with puts all the burden of risk
on you. At the very least you should ask them for information about
how many images they sell for how much money each year.

However since you are not a well known professional, you won't
be able to get a contract from the big agencies that can really
sell your work. So you have to decide if these people actually
have customers or whether they are just another website that
nobody knows about and no photo buyers ever visit.

No, I have never heard of them & and if Google has not heard of them either,
they can not be much of a force in the marketplace.

If they are asking for money, from you, you can be fairly sure it is a
rip=off.

As a general rule if they charge you up front to represent you they are to
be regarded with suspicion.

Cautionary tale. I used to date a girl named Morrissette who looked a Hell
of a lot like Alanis and sang a lot like her and had about the same
attitude (note, Alanis was about 2 years old when this was going on) and I
would not be at all surprise to find was related. She had paid some guy
purporting to be an agent $5K to represent her. One day somehow it came to
pass that Carly Simon heard one of her songs and wanted to record it. This
jackass had her music so tied up that even he couldn't figure out a way to
sell Carly the rights to perform that song. If he had been any kind of
competent agent quite possibly both they would both be zillionaires right
now but as it sits the last I heard of her she was waiting tables and he
was still trying to get people to pay him 5 grand a head to represent them.

Do _not_ let your work get tied up in that kind of mess.

Sounds like the same idea as a "vanity publisher" - you know, those
outfits that will gladly accept and publish a book for you... for a
price. If it sells, great for you... if not, they've got nothing to lose.

Google has certainly heard of them (301,000 hits!) Eugene said they didn't
have anything *negative* on them (although I'm not going to check that many
links to find out!)

Other people have queried their integrity, but no specific complaints are
evident in a quick search. See
