This 250 year old writing machine fascinated me.
To put this post on topic for photography, I think the mechanism would
make for some interesting photographs.

Yup! I saw this BBC documentary about six months ago.
I use a VPN to obscure my location so I can access BBC iPlayer and iTV
programming. The documentaries are very good, and I prefer BBC F1
coverage to the commercial butchered presentation on NBC_SC.

I have no clue how to do that.

A VPN is a "Virtual Private Network" they can serve different purposes
in the commercial or the private world.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network

For us mere mortals at home who just want to make it appear that we
might be in the UK and not the US so that we can access regionally
restricted streaming there are free and pay VPN services.
There is a regular in this group, who because he lives in Canada and
can't get US Netflix and some other TV content in Canada, uses a VPN so
that he appears to be in the USA. He has a free service he recommends.

I started with a free VPN but now I use a pay service "ZenMate" which
provides a plugin for some browsers, a desktop app, and apps for my
mobile devices.

I have it installed on my iPad where it can be turned on or off as
needed. On my Mac I have the plugin installed in Chrome. So all my
foriegn stream viewing is done on my iPad or on Chrome which is my
dedicated phantom browser.
https://zenmate.com

So I can see documentaries such as these:

Not that I have noticed. I get the occasional hesitation when watching
a foreign stream, but otherwise there are no issues.

My ISP is Charter, and they ran a fiber optic cable from Paso Robles to
where I live 13 miles to the West out at Lake Nacimiento. They seem to
improve service year to year.

BTW: As a word of warning not all VPNs are created equal and some
should be avoided, particularly Hola.

The mechanics inside, say, a Leica II are fairly amazing. And this is
just astonishing: thanks for posting.
