Images are embargoed until it's not pre-production. The lens is big, about 14" long and then 20" extended. The build is mid-range, plastic bodied mostly but the balance is good. It feels like the 80-400mm only longer. Has a tripod mounting leg on it. Focusing is fast, but I was using a Nikon D810A so that probably helped. Subjectively, the images are sharp at 500mm f/5.6 and f/8.0, but I'd rather see them on a computer screen.

Thanks for the heads up.

This lens will have tremendous reach on a mFT body. ;-p You know, with
one of these:

I wonder how it will compare with the Sigma 150-600 Sport. On a FF. Not
that I can't hold my breath though...

Not with any adaptor for Olympus, Fuji, etc., no AE metering either.

The Sigma has AF on FF...

However, your initial thought was the potential additional reach of the
new Nikkor 200-500mm if used on a M4/3 with an adaptor, and not any
other FF such as a Sigma FF. Currently none of the Nikkor-(any body)
adaptors available provide AF or AE.

Then you wondered how it would compare with the Sigma 150-600mm S on a FF.

Ain't there a twisty ring on those thingys? Whatever,
I'm pretty
sure that Sigma supports autofocus on Nikon...

Yes it does. I'm talking about the adopter ring.

It was a rhetorical question.

And? Which word are you claiming that I used incorrectly?
(hint: another rhetorical question.)

It was a public service announcement, sort of. ;-p

It also has an electronic aperture - "E" lens, and no aperture control
ring like "G" lenses.
For "G" lenses there's a kludge workaround for MFT adapters etc with
adjustable ring on them which tweaks the stop-down lever, but there's no
stop-down lever on "E" lenses. IIRC when not mounted, the aperture on E
lenses is open, so I guess with adapter it might be able to be used
fully wide.
So...
No AF, no AE, no VR, no aperture control. At 500mm (so-called focal
length "equivalent" 1000mm on MFT) then good luck - the results might be
interesting but it doesn't seem very useful.

Nikon 1 series might be interesting, as with adapter some long teles
work with AF and VR functioning. Their lens compatibility chart lists
some "E" long teles working with the 1 series, but there's no mention in
that list of the 200-500. It is however mentioned on the same document
- but an "incompatibility" list - as not working with the J5.

Meh - all a bit pointless IMO. With a bit of luck it'll work without
MFT needed on Nikon bodies, in which case it'd probably work fine mated
to a cheap Nikon 24mp aps-c DSLR body with pixel density (thus reach)
the same as you'd get with MFT anyway.
